The Skyrim Script Extender (SKSE) is game version specific. Pay close attention to which version of the game you have installed.
If you just downloaded and installed the game, purchased the AE DLC to install on an already owned and current Skyrim SE, or if you recently purchased the bundle of Skyrim Special Edition with the Anniversary DLC included, then you need:
"Current Anniversary Edition build 2.2.6 (game version 1.6.1170)"
The GOG version is also listed on the site as build 2.2.6 (game version 1.6.1179).
Skyrim game version 1.5.97 is also listed for those still using the outdated game. Anyone wishing to use SKSE for game version 1.6.640 will need to look at the Archive Builds for SKSE64 version 2.2.3.
Manually download and extract into the Skyrim Special Edition game folder (the file space that includes the SkyrimSE.EXE), not the 'Data' folder. Please review the 'skse64_readme.txt' file included with the download for further instructions.
If you have SKSE installed or are upgrading SKSE, you will need to remove all files associated with the previous version.
