If I need sneaky and quick, Cicero is my choice. Fighting vampires? I'll take Ingjard. For color commentary, Zora Fair-Child is amazing. (she has commentary on very nearly every location and quest in the game).
I rarely use followers. I tend to collect them and keep them in homes across the land. When a particularly challenging quest arises, I choose the follower(s) best suited for the job.
The best follower is Frea, this not an opinion, it's a fact. She has no level cap, is essential, and dual wields normal weapons.
Since we are including mods however, I think the Dialogue Add-On version of Serana is my favorite, along-side Auri, especially since they have conversations with each other.
jzargo is in the top 5 worst followers in the game imo, who wants a follower who spams sparks? Even when he gets his paralyze spell most other follower will be more helpfull than him. i don't know where this jzargo myth comes from...maybe people never try other followers?
frea is THE beast, no debate.
Serana could be the best but she's not.
Mjoll is among my favourites but a lot less effective than frea.
I view Mjoll as the proto-Frea she is a lesser version in every way, but she is still essential.
When I mentioned Serana, (well the Dialogue add-on version, as I don't particularity like Vanilla Serana) I was talking about her personality rather than her combat effectiveness.
That mod makes her far more enjoyable to be with, and I like actually recruiting her early before doing much else, she comments on a lot of things, like the guild quests for example. I recently did the College with her at my side through the whole thing, and she remarks about the quests you're doing.
I usually have like a dozen followers though. All melee attackers and theyre allowed to dismember enemies.
I could never get her as a follower, is it because I joined the thieves guild?
Just make sure you go through all her dialogue options then get out of riften and come back later for the dialogue option to show up.
Make sure you don't have any other "fetch specific item" quest active (not sure about this specific one but many side quests function like this).
if everything is fine she will give you her quest to the dwemer ruins.
Get the sword, done.
You have to have a positive relationship with her, which you can get by simply agreeing the theives guild is bad (which has no impact pn joining them) or helping out the people of Riften. Then you need to ask her what happened to her, and she'll tell you about her lost weapon. If you then go an grab it, you can bring it back to her, at that point she will follow you.
I will add that, after your initial conversation with her and earning some reputation (helping the people or completing the Thane quest), you need to level up once for the dialog option to show.
