Edit: Everything i read says only 4 creations were given for free to special edition owners, for the rest of the content you need to upgrade for $20
Mostly need to know what the state of the modding community is, if most of the mods are up to date at this point in time.
As 2 MODS, the essentials are upto date, an some of the minor MODS are updated too, you should check nexus ya self, an check the MODS your interested in.
There are some exceptions, mods which were abandoned and never updated, but I think it’s fair to say that these ones either satisfy niche interests or were already replaced by other mods which do the same thing.
Please note though that there is no technical difference between Anniversary Edition and Special Edition.
It’s not like talking about Legendary Edition (the original 2011 release) vs Special Edition (the 2016 remaster) which are two entirely separate programs.
“Anniversary Edition” = Special Edition.
The Anniversary Upgrade is a DLC for Special Edition released in November 2021 to celebrate the game’s 10th anniversary. It includes all content released through the Creation Club from 2017 to 2021.
The modding community began using the term “Anniversary Edition” to refer to Special Edition from November 2021 onwards.
This is due to the 1.6 update that released alongside the DLC which added Fishing, Rare Curios, Saints and Seducers, and Survival Mode to everyone’s copy of Special Edition.
Initially, a large population of players chose not to update their Special Edition past 1.5.97 - either because they didn’t want those 4 pieces of CC content, or because they wanted to continue playing and not have to wait around for their various mods to update.
However, even as time went on, a population of players continued to keep their game at 1.5.97. Even today there’s still a relatively small group that does.
To cater to both the 1.5.97 and the 1.6+ crowd, mod makers began releasing two versions of their mod. To distinguish between the two, Special Edition (“SE”) was used to refer to 1.5.97, and Anniversary Edition (“AE”) was used to refer to 1.6+
If it says it’s for 1.6.1170 then it’s for the current version. If it only says 1.6+, 1.6.640+, or 1.6.1130+ then check the mod page’s comments for people complaining about it not working with the current version.
If it only gives you SE and AE, you’d want the AE, but check the comments for complaints about it not working with 1.6.1170.
If it only gives you SE, or only AE - check the comments and the last time the mod was updated (1.6.1170 dropped on January 17th 2024 IIRC).
If it doesn’t give you anything - SE/AE or game version number - then it may not matter. Most - if not all - texture, graphics, weapon/armor, asset replacer, NPC replacers, etc are not tied to game version.
Unless you like your game ruined by possibly bad Creation Club content
There's going to be some though that aren't, but given how much Skyrim mods have been improved and progressed that's not surprising.
You should have more than enough mods to build a new modded Skyrim.
