Racemenu does not work on Steam Deck.
Trying to mod skyrim on the steam deck has been hell. After 20 arduous hours I've stumbled over issue after issue with seemingly no end in sight.

List of issues & their solutions:

- How to download Vortex mod manager on Steam Deck (https://github.com/pikdum/steam-deck)
- How to install SKSE on Steam Deck (https://retroresolve.com/guides/install-skse-on-steam-deck/)
- How to run SkyUI on Steam Deck (https://forums.nexusmods.com/topic/8193673-skyui-linux/)
- How to fix mouse sensitivity going crazy on the Steam Deck (https://stepmodifications.org/forum/topic/19255-new-bsteamdeck-ini-setting-and-the-default-generated-ini-files-on-steam-deck/)

Now I'm facing yet another hurdle with Racemenu not loading in game. I've made sure all the mods are compatible with the anniversary version of the game, I've also made sure to load the racemenu after skyUI, I've enabled the RaceMenu.esp plugin in Vortex, I've wiped, enabled, reanabled and reinstalled skyUI and racemenu in different orders, I've verified the game files, I've uninstalled and reinstalled the base game multiple times, I've sorted the mods using LOOT, I'm launching the game with SKSE. Nothing.

Racemenu simply does not work on the steam deck:Compa_VII: Is there a hero out there who could change my mind?

TL;DR:
Racemenu not loading in game. Vanilla character creation has two new tabs ''$Extra'' and ''$Expression''.

The only other mods I have installed besides the ones mentioned above is FNIS, FNIS Creatures and All in one Address Library.

Oh snap! Have you thought about buying second-hand steam decks?

Second-hand gadgets have been a bad experience for me, so I tend to steer clear of them.

On the PC, Racemenu works for me if I just enable Racemenu.esp in Vortex. I don't need to enable RacemenuPlugin.esp as (if I recall correct) Racemenu doesn't work if it is enabled. I think RacemenuPlugin.esp is for some legacy purpose. Even LOOT says RacemenuPlugin.esp is optional.

Does SKSE work for you on the steam deck?
If you launch the game, open the console window and run the command: SKSE,
does it show the SKSE version number?
Racemenu requires SKSE.

Yes to everything. Nothing.

That's understandable. I've been lucky in that regard as well. Do you have any relatives in a different country whom you could ask to buy the steam deck for you if you pay them? Shipping might be a little extra I suppose.

Skyrim update introduced a bug/misbehavior into SSE Engine Fixes mod, so a default setting disables all plugins on boot.

To avoid this issue, you simply need to open the file "Skyrim Special Edition/Data/SKSE/Plugins/EngineFixes.toml" in a text editor. Find the [Patches] section, then locate the line EnableAchievementsWithMods and change the value to false.

If using MO2, you would find the config file in the mods install folder. In MO2 its right click, open in explorer and just find file, edit that line to false.

Yes, that relative/friend approach will work, and I did think to try it, but then I withheld the urge.

To be honest, I am already partially addicted to gaming (I mean I can go days or weeks without gaming, but sometimes I dream about some recent game, so does that count as addiction? LOL), so to save my sanity, I am avoiding being desperate to get hold of the Steam Deck,

We all do what we think is best. For me it was a no-brainer since I didn't have a gaming system nor a working pc, so the steam deck was a two birds with one stone kind of deal for me thst I could use for both work and entertainment. It was a lot cheaper than buying a modern high-end computer.

Would downloading the SSE Engine Fixes mod help fix RaceMenu?
vee-kay Jun 18, 2024 @ 10:53pm
SSE Engine Fixes is an essential mod to improve the game performance/stability, please do install it.

Honestly, if racemenu doesn't work then I see no point in continuing to play skyrim. It just weren't meant to be I guess.

Nah, racemenu is optional.

@[A's Will] Sam: Go ahead and play the game without racemenu, if you can.

You can later fix the racemenu installation, and inside the game you can tweak your character appearance using ShowLimitedRaceMenu console command (as that's safer than the ShowRaceMenu command). Or use the Vanity Mirror mod, it works well on all the game versions.

It is essential for a lot of the mods I intend to install. I managed to find a solution. I borrowed my friend's laptop and installed racemenu on their windows computer then transferred the modded game files to my steam deck using warpinator.
