DO not make essential NPCs nonessential!!!!
Someone is posting a tweek to the ini file that removes the protection from EVERY essential NPC in the game. Using this .ini tweek is a VERY BAD IDEA!

If you use it, the NPCs who are supposed to be protected from dying, will no longer be protected. Again this applies to all of them, it's not a targetted command, it changes a basic function for the game. This means NPCs who are supposed to give quests, or receive them when completed may be dead when you need them.

If you want to change the essential status of an NPC, first find out why they are set to essential, with a handful of exceptions there is a reason. Then use a console command, people here will tell you it, we just try to make sure you know what you are doing first....

And if you do use the .ini tweek that makes all NPCs unprotected, don't ask how you fix a quest, because the answer is undo the .ini tweek and start a new game.

Problem with this is as I said except for a reload there's no backup plan implemented. Also I have no problems with people breaking their game, but what we're afraid of are people that don't know what the're doing implement the ini tweak and come complaining here they broke their game

Somebody's actually posting a tweak like that? Oh, great. As if Skyrim players didn't already have ENOUGH headaches.

Exactly the kind of problem I'm talking about.

Isn't that a net benefit though in the grand scheme of things?
On a personal level, yes.
On the level of continuing the main quest, No!

unfortunately....

Still don't know how she steals the horn when "only a dragonborn" can get it... Stuff like that kind of fuels the hate on her

The locked backdoor that can only be opened from inside?

bro what? Apr 30, 2024 @ 9:57am
Why are you telling me that NPCs die if I make them nonessential? I'm making them nonessential so I can kill em myself

FYI: there's no backway! Only one way in and one way out: the front door!

Delphine's actions don't make sense. How did she sneak through all of the mages and Draugr, reset all the traps, pass through the web-blocked final room entrance, and steal the horn without issue? Yet, when meeting her and Esbern outside of Skyhaven Temple, she face-tanks the Forsworn and is worthless at sneaking.

If she was so sneaky that she could do all of the above, why didn't she go into Bleakfalls Barrow herself?

Anyway, this is a bit of a tangent.

Because making a named NPC non-essential, especially one tied to quests, doesn't mean you are the only one that can kill them. Anyone can kill them, even when you are not there.

If you do that with individuals ok ... no problem, but if you do that in general everyone dies take for instance elenwyn dies in a bandit attack for instance from Helgen to solitude or to the greybeards well that's the main quest done for even without your input or Rikke or Tulius or Ullfric well that's the entire civil war done for .... need more examples?

Probably a dev issue. Not well thought and too little time to provide a proper solution. Beth did a better job in Morrowind.

As I said Bethesda never implemented a backup solution if a quest giver dies .... the game just expects the person to be alive
