Skyrim SE/AE on SD OLED
Regardless of the additional costs, are there any reasons (performance, stability, visuals, modding…) why you‘d recommend the SE over AE on the Deck?
Haven’t played Skyrim for a decade now but would like to jump in again since the Steam Deck makes it possible for me.
I‘ve read the AE is basically the SE with additional creation club content as an official dlc, but I’m wondering whether the overall experience and modding differs somehow?

Let's first clear the terminology between SE and AE.

Up to date version of the game is considered as "AE", without the Anniversary Edition. There was a choke point of mod updates after compiler update, which divided mods between "SE" and "AE", pointing if they were using old patch or up to date one.

That dividing line is dying away as pointless. Some players still stick with it, due to some extremely niche mod updates, or just being unwilling to jump over as sign of rebellion. But, pretty much every single relevant mod has gained either and update or replacement. And all the new content is released for up to date patch. I see no reason to go back in to old patch version of the game.

AE brought in few added creations, which are now considered as part of full game. Most of them go pretty much unnoticed and ad some extra ingredients and stuff in to game. The Saints and Seducers creation is more invasive, adding two new factions and hostiles around the map. I actually believe that they should have left it as just downloadable creation, instead of merging it in to game.

Anniversary Edition DLC includes all the creations that were previously released in Creation Club. Their quality vary and having so many of them does of course affect on your gaming experience. Will that be positive or negative change depends on you. I have decided to skip whole DLC, though there are few creations that I have considered as standalone ones, mostly due to grand mod called Legacy of the Dragonborn, which utilizes them as collectables.

Based on your list, Vee-Kay, where would my game version land (1.6.640)? Because even though the four base CC mods were added, I still have Special Edition. That's what it says in the Steam library and on the game title page. When I update to the current version, guess what, I will STILL have Special Edition.

All the 1.6+ (also termed 1.6.x) versions of the game are deemed as AE by the modding community, because the Anniversary edition of the game dropped as version 1.6. This AE is not to be confused as the name of the game, it refers to the specific versions of the game.

The last version of Skyrim before the Anniversary update is 1.5.97, and that is called as SE by the modding community. This SE is not to be confused as the name of the game, it refers to the specific version of the game.

The old version of Skyrim, before the Special Edition update, is nicknamed as Oldrim or LE (legendary edition) by the modding community, and its last version is 1.9.32.

One could argue that there's no AE, or that AE=SE+CC, but when you start looking at game version numbers, then it is clearly agreed within the modding community that AE is 1.6.x and SE is 1.5.97.

What the game name says on the tin is immaterial, because the mods needs to work with the specific game versions, hence these specific version-based nicknames adopted by the modding community make sense.
