HELP. Not shouting?

My Z key does not shout? I have killed about 10 dragons and absorbed the Shout. Do I need to do a quest before learning to shout? I held the Z key down for a long time but nothing?

The quest that you are required to do to learn to shout is also the quest required to get dragons to spawn (the one where you encounter the dragon at the watchtower near Whiterun).

Killing dragons does not absorb shouts. You absorb souls from dragons. You can then use those souls to unlock the shouts you learn from the various word walls spread across the map. Killing dragons by itself does not teach you shouts.

After learning a shout and spending dragon souls to unlock it, you have to select the shout you want to use the same way you select any other power or ability.

Dragon Rising. Its right after you return from Bleak Falls Barrow with the Dragon Stone.

Like I said, if you have dragons in your world you have done that quest. The quest is "Dragon Rising", which you get from the court mage in Whiterun. He sends you into Bleak Falls Barrow to retrieve the Dragonstone (which you may have done so before he asks you, as the merchant in Riverwood also sends you there). Upon returning the Dragonstone, a guard runs in and alerts everyone to a dragon attacking the watchtower.

If you haven't done that quest, there should be no dragons at all in the world. If you have an alternate start mod or some other mod messing with dragons, its possible one of those is causing an issue.

If you're not using the fus ro dah shout which the game gives you access to right at the start, are you remembering to power those shouts with dragon souls first? The ones you learn from the shout walls need to be activated first with a dragon soul.

Once you've killed the dragon at the Watchtower, and absorbed its soul, then the first level of the "unrelenting force" shout should be automatically unlocked.
Or is shouting mapped to a different key?

You also have to select a shout or magic power before it can be used by pressing the z-key.
If you have selected an innate power from your race instead of a shout, that one will be used when you press the z-key.

Shouts have to be unlocked with dragon souls before they can be used.
