Which ones have you tried? For the most part most follower mods shouldn't be breaking due to skyrim updates unless they specifically depend on mods that get broken from the updates, and I don't think there's a long list of follower mods that fit that criteria.
Nether's Follower Framework - https://www.nexusmods.com/skyrimspecialedition/mods/55653
Has some requirements so make sure you check that you have what is needed.
And:
EFF - Extensible Follower Framework - https://www.nexusmods.com/skyrimspecialedition/mods/7003
Has no requirements.
Personally, I have used EFF for years and am satisfied with it. But many now use Nether's, and are very happy with it, as well.
It's what I use. You should listen to them.
As to the policy of not using a mod that has comments locked, thats ... a you thing. Its perfectly fine to set yourself some download criteria, but you may find yourself lacking some of the best mods out there.
I will check the comments and bug sections to see if there are any glaring, unresolved problems. If not, and the requirements can be met, its a go for me.
Help, mod is not working.
-> Have you made sure you have all the required mods installed?
-> What required mods.
what you should pay attention to are bug reports, especially how many and what is being reported. if a mod has unresolved bug reports that complain about a gamebreaking bug and that report is 3 years old, THAT'S a mod you should dodge. even if comments are enabled
Nether's Follower Framework should be what you'd go with. As far as I remember it was considered the most compatible and flexible follower framework that doesn't strictly break custom followers unless the custom follower mod specifically says not to integrate them into the framework, and everything about NFF is optional in-game IIRC.
