Thanks Steam for the push to GOG
I know there are those who will flame my post and that's fine. Everyone is entitled to their opinion. I don't like updates forced because sometimes they cause problems with the game or its mods. GOG allows updates to be turned off, so it's a simple choice. GOG doesn't always have a game I want, but I prefer to get from there when they do.

You sure showed them by paying bethesda twice.

I'm platform agnostic, and there are thigs I like about GOG (including unconditional 30 day return). Bu be aware, on many games, GOG has a slightly outdated version compared to Steam, and less responsive customer service/less developer involvement (it's a smaller platform). But they are reliable, have classic games that other platforms don't, and the best return policy. Epic is a PITA but they give away a freebie every week, so they're worth working with.

Choosing a platform or service isn't like choosing a religion or a house or a spouse. It's more like choosing a delivery or ride-share or date. Do yer due diligence, and then do you, boo.

I buy GOG when I can, however I bought it here long before I even heard of GOG. Makes no sense to purchase twice. Maybe I will just have the collection there as well, since I have Morrowind and I got Oblivion for free there.

Migrated to the GOG version when it released and never looked back. Not only is there no forced update, but if you did somehow accidently update, GOG provides support for older versions. In Skyrim's case this will only be the first AE version available however.

Many people argue why buy Skyrim twice - having a DRM free version is a no brainer, at least for me.

I just set the game to not update on steam, and launch it through my mod manager, game asks for update, but I can still play it without having to update it as long as I don't run it directly from my steam library

I think it's really stupid that you can't turn off updates but can select a beta version to redownload back to (if the developer allows it), gaben probably doesn't know this.
you do realise at some point they will push paid mods onto GOG too?

I don't even use the GOG launcher so i don't need anything to be turned off.
Without launcher the game even runs smoother, less memory use.

*They're *optional
Couldn't figure that out for a few minutes.

Hmm I wonder what's more of a pain preventing the game from updating or shell out more money for another copy?

DRM free, no launcher, no automatic updates. And the old script extender and older mods are still all available. The only thing Bethesda did, was kill the sales on steam. If they update it. You still have the previous version.

Keep in mind the GoG version does have the one issue of not being able to roll it back to 1.5.7 so for example you cant use No Grass In Objects with it. Main reason ive stuck with the Steam version.
