Mods are a headache... should I just get Anniversary Edition?!
I could spend all day downloading mods and chasing the required mods to make them work... beyond tedious. Seems there's no easy way to do this.

I'm a lazy man. Should I just download the Anniversary Edition and skip the headache?!

If you buy the anniversary DLC this weekend you will have a totally different headache.

The best way to skip the "headache" is to not download any. You don't need the anniversary DLC to not download mods

As someone that has been doing a mod less run I will give some pointers. As a light armor user it gives more variety as dadric gets a light armor which you get really easy. Dwarven and orcish gets some extra light armor. There is a goblin follower that is essential and summons a storm atronock so that's kinda broken. Survival mod although basic does prevent you from fast travel and adds some simple requirements that make the more frozen areas a bigger pain to travel. So thata cool. Most the gear is slightly more powerful then base game stuff. Quests are forgettable. So if you're doing a Modless run it's worth. If your not then not so much.

They are currently running maintenance for mods and Creation Club, even if you got the anniversary upgrade you would not be able to use it because it requires those two things to download. This has been going on for like four days now.

Hmmm. It does all the work for you, but you're trying to get it to work? One of the many reasons these bs modpacks / collections suck.

Just get a collection

from personal experience i can suggest to just buy the AE stuff. you can find it pretty cheap to websites other than steam. plus from all the mods i been following up on they're all updating to latest AE version. mod authors are getting really tired of having to maintain multiple versions of their own mods.

As Tulle indicated above, there is no standalone Anniversary Edition (AE) of the game. There is only Skyrim Special Edition (v. 1.6.640). The AE is a collection of all 79 of the Creation Club mods in one DLC.

It it up to the individual player to review what is included in the DLC and decide whether it is something of value to add to their game. As indicated, the Bethesda servers that handle the mods included in the AE DLC are down for maintenance. There is no indication as to when these will become available. This means that a recent purchaser of the DLC will not be able to download the mods.

As for mod collections and/or mod-pack's, While these appear to be easy to use they do not allow someone new to modding to understand the nuances of modding Skyrim. It doesn't teach anything about modding and does require some advanced knowledge on how to troubleshoot mods when things do go awry. Additionally, you will not be able to ask for help on this forum if an issue occurs and will need to review the mod collection forum for information.

If a new player wants to learn about modding their game, they can review the modding guides in the pinned topics at the top of the forum page. One such guide can be found in the link below.

i have used tons of different wabbajack mod lists and even changed some things about them and i've not once had any issues. even crazy ones with thousands of mods are very stable as they've been around for awhile and are pretty well documented and put together well.

That's right. if going with Wabbajack I would suggest starting off small with just one mod from one of their galleries here (for SSE/AE version):

https://www.wabbajack.org/gallery?selectedGame=Skyrim%20Special%20Edition

Mod lists are here:
https://loadorderlibrary.com/lists/

Sample lists for Oblvion:
https://loadorderlibrary.com/lists/last-seed
or
https://loadorderlibrary.com/lists/heartland-226

Best thing to get the most incredible gaming experience, is to learn MO2, how to setup SKSE, OBSE, MWSE and the like, and LOOT.

If going that route, I recommend grabbing just one mod from the Utility category of a favored Wabbajack collection, find it on Nexus, learn all about it, and install and debug that one first. Then continue to add more, one at a time or a few at a time, and see the effect.

I just started a new playthrough in Oblivion using that approach, first installing only OBSE and the OBSE tester in the Utilities section and making sure those were working first. After that, I took a few mods suggestions from Heartland and Last Seed. Then I searched Nexus for mods that would fit an Orc Tankmage playthrough.

With that said, going into SSE with all the DLC and all the AE enabled, is like going on a ten mile hike in the snow in very cold weather wearing only a light sports outfit.

To avoid that, learn and install MO2/Nexus/LOOT to dress Skyrim to the nines for all seasons and situations with about 60,000 mods and 3.4 billion downloads.
