You can store items in random containers for a couple of days after which these containers will reset and anything you have put in will be lost. This is still good enough very early in the game until you can afford a house.
You can then buy houses in many of the larger towns of Skyrim after you have done some quests for the Jarls. Their stewards will then offer you the option to buy a house and also to add some furniture. The containers inside the houses will store your items permanently and will not reset. Some player homes also have containers outside the house, which will also hold items permanently.
If you have the Anniversary Edition can you also find some special player homes scattered over Skyrim. I.e. the Tundra Homestead east of Whiterun. Some of these you do not have to buy, but you may need to do a quest first in order to access these.
