Fix: Steam deck keyboard crashing
I had this bug where bringing up the on screen keyboard with steam + x and then closeing it immediately crashes Skyrim which stops me from using console commands

I've noticed a lot of people also having this problem so I'm posting my fix

I found a fix / workaround if you make the game popup the keyboard for you eg name something in the enchanter then exit popping up the keyboard with steam + x and closeing it anywhere else eg console commands no longer crashes Skyrim.

Hope this helps

Holy crap, dude, it worked for me too. Thank you SO much, I'm very grateful!

Question: is it a permanent fix for you or do you need to keep doing this every time you load up the game? For me the fix works until I am finished playing and then close out the game to desktop. Then the keyboard causes a crash again next time I boot up the game, so I have to do the exploit again. Just a heads up to anyone reading this, it's not a permanent fix but better than nothing. Really hope Bethesda patches this, but I'm happier having this than nothing at all. Thanks again dude!

Yea I have to do it every time I reboot the game to I just forgot to mention it
It works! I was having this exact problem, and I thought, “surely this hasn’t happened to anyone else.” But of course it has. Thanks so much for the fix.

1: boot up the game
2: Go to enchanting table
3: select an item to enchant an enchantment and a soul gem
4: press y to name the item it should pull up a overlay with the keyboard
5: exit out of enchanting (you don't have to craft the item)
6: profit you can now pull up the keyboard overlay with steam+x and close it without crashing for the rest of the play session

I don't know what else pulls up the keyboard but I'm pretty sure anything that does should have the same effect

Thanks so much, I didn't understand either - thanks to xavierbarbary for asking and then thanks for to Djidane781's post that directly said how to do it as I'm new to the game series altogether and wanted to give it a try. I'm wanting to play it on Steam Deck and not just on PC if I can avoid it - saw this issue while looking into getting the game, and since there's this workaround I am gonna get it. Thanks again

sounds like the steam deck is tapping into the bit of the game for controllers to add names, possibly it's this and the steam deck's own keyboard that are clashing.....
Pretty stupid if it is.

funny how this problem makes the game verified now, I love all these extra steps I never had to do before just to play the ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ game, I cant even make a new character! Are these stupid ♥♥♥♥♥ even playtesting before they deploy a patch anymore?

That's a rhetorical question, the answer is obvious

I had to play the game on desktop mode and use kde connect's remote input just to name my character, this is so unbelievably asinine. We're well beyond the point of industry giants becoming their own satire lmao

Holy moly this actually works but what an absolutely ridiculous workaround!

For those CTDing from closing the onscreen "Steam + X" keyboard while playing Skyrim SE on Steam Deck, here's my own workaround:
1. Make a new separate save.
2. When Hadvar asks you, "Who are you?", save.
3. When you get to the character creation menu, press X.
4. Choose "Ok" when asked, "Finish and name your character?"
5. When you are taken to the "Please Enter Text" screen, exit that screen.
6. Press "Steam + X" or whatever input you choose instead of "Steam + X", to bring up the onscreen "Steam + X" keyboard.
7. Close the onscreen "Steam + X" keyboard and you will see that the game will not CTD whenever you close the onscreen "Steam + X" keyboard as long as the game is still running.
8. Keep the save file and load it up everytime you want to play Skyrim SE on Steam Deck and repeat steps 3 to 5, then you can quit to main menu and go back to your current playthrough by choosing "Load" and selecting the save that has the name of your current playthrough's character.
