How to get rid of Nilheim "kill bandit leader" misc quest
So, I killed Telrav before picking up the radiant quest to kill the bandit leader in (you guessed it) Nilheim. Based on UESP wiki, I have a couple of options:
1. reload to earlier save -- no can do, that was in around save 100 and I am in save 300+ (I accidentally asked the barkeep in Ivarstead for a job and he gave me this)
2. console resurrect and kill him to trigger quest completion

My question is, HOW to do #2? I went to Nilheim and did a manual save. Following the info in UESP wiki, I opened the console, typed resurrect prid xxxxxx. It SEEMED to be complete but he didn't appear. So I tried moveto.player prid but nothing happened. I reverted the save and came to you. I don't actually use the console for anything so I have no idea how it should be responding.

Can anyone give me see-the-ball-the-ball-is-red level of instructions for getting this misc quest out of my quest journal?

(Alternatively, is there a mod that lets you remove journal entries, though this seems riskier by far)

if its a radiant quest to kill a generic bandit leader , but you had already recently cleared the dungeon just before getting the quest killing a named bandit in the process , it should eventually reset and respawn the area with a basic bandit leader back in the dungeon . 10-30 days ( in game )

Note that for an area to respawn you have to completely stay away from the area for the entire time - if you ever get close enough, the timer resets. Though the wiki does mention a bug:

If cleared, the Bandit Leader will not respawn, making it impossible to complete the Kill the Bandit Leader bounty from Riften.

And:

Alternatively, in the console enter the following commands to resurrect the bandit chief of this location and teleport him to yourself: "prid 72a8d" "resurrect" "moveto player".
Enter each section of quotes individually, and without the quotes themselves. As always, make a save first.

Well, if his original corpse is still around, clicking on it while the console is open and only typing "resurrect" should do the trick.

That said, resurrecting NPCs can break all sorts of stuff.

Corpse disappeared ages ago. So I guess I will have to continually ignore the misc quest I cannot complete?

SIGH

(mental note for next time around: ignore telrav until I get the radiant quest. Actually, spam wilhelm until I get that radiant quest sheesh.)

You should be able to use the setstage command in the console if you can figure out the mission number.

If you are not already using this site, you should be:

The guy is still alive in my current game. It's an old save. The guy does ask me to help him, but he doesn't do anything once we cross the bridge. I don't remember the whole quest, but the outpost is currently occupied by "guards", which I think doesn't happen until the bandit quest is over. Which doesn't make sense, but oh well, it's Skyrim.
The save also has the stalled Nghtingales quest. I'm using it for some 'new lands' mods since the character was already at a high level.
I may just go back and kill him eventually, and see what happens.
My miscellaneous quest log is really full, but I no longer obsess over it. Now I just try to clear out multiple quests when I'm in the area, assuming it's not out of the way of the quest I'm on.
Well without the guy I think they called guards I mean they are not called bandits ... except that they are that's part of the ruse, Have you anything touching Nillheim ... it sounds like the pathfinding is off. Normally what happens is you cross the bridge the guy says wait here I'll get your reward he walks up the stairs towards the tower and says get him.

It sounds something is interfering with that location.

Nilheim is a non-respawning location. Telrav is a unique (named) NPC who will be moved to the "death cell". He can be moved back and resurrected by using the following console commands (press enter after each line):
prid 1BA06 moveto player resurrect 1
Kill him and maybe your quest will be completed. Let us know if the quest completes.

You can also end the quest by console (AS LAST RESORT) it depends who the questgiver is (bounty, companions, etc)

This worked, thank you! All this time I thought Telrav was the bandit leader, but it spawned an orc bandit, I killed it and the quest cleared. Off to get my bounty reward and enjoy one less misc quest entry!!

The prid here didn't work for me, but the explanation and procedure did. Thank you so much!

Nilheim is not part of the vanilla radiant quests "Kill the bandit leader". Do you have a mod that ads this type of radiant quests? The base game has only one quest for Nilheim, "Telrav's Request".

There are 2 different quests. "Kill the Bandit Leader" (quest ID Favor104), which only comes from a small number of NPCs, and the bounty to kill a bandit boss (quest ID BQ01), which comes from any jarl, steward, or innkeeper.

Nilheim is a valid location for the bounty quest, but not the other one.

Didn't take a look at that one, "Bounty: Bandit Leader" as opposite to "Kill the Bandit Leader". Confusing at the least!

It was the bounty quest from ivarstead innkeeper, apologies for the confusion.
