Looking for a mod that allows you to create and customize your own follower

No, given that followers require scripts to work it would be a complicated mod that lets you tailor one to your tastes.
Most people just try the various follower mods, and stick with the ones they like, Inigo is popular for example.

Making a Follower is not that Hard. The main issue would be Customizing the Appearence.

Then getting that appearence to stick.

Not sure what the popular options are with that regard.

LazyFollowers works well enough.

Basically it allows you to save your current character as a preset and then create a follower NPC using that preset.

EDIT: Not sure about SE, but Oldrim also had the "meet your followers" mod, which was really nice... when it worked. Damn thing was bugged to high hell and back.

If you want the hardcore stuff. I recommend giving Proteus a try. Can save your characters and their stats and can summon them as a follower. Much more too.

Nethers Follower Framework, I think is the one wicked lester means. Am just starting to play with that. It doesn't create followers from scratch but you can choose any existing NPC then equip them with whatever armour and weapons you like.
