Lost Tongue Overlook crash?
Hey yall, my game keeps crashing at and around Lost Tongue Overlook, which is roughly south of Riften. I have also experienced crashes east of this area. I'm only using mods which are available through the in-game mods menu (including USSEP), ironically, to simplify things and try to avoid problems, though I'm not experiencing any other issues.

I've tried uninstalling mods which affect textures and NPC behaviors to no avail. Not really used to modding games. I know a lot of other folks have experienced crashes in the same area after Bethesda apparently removed some kind of texture file or something like that? What can I do to fix this?

First, when you say you have tried removing mods..... Are you aware that mods can't be removed unless you are either loading a save from before you installed them or starting a new game?

Second, go to "Helpful Links and References" it has a troubleshooting guide
(it and "Skyrim SE:Player Guides and resources" have a wealth of useful guides and links)

Third post your load order, if you don't know what a load order is, read the stuff in "Helpful Links and References" and "Skyrim SE:Player guides and Resources" (can't state enough how useful these two threads are)
I'm strictly using Bethesda mods available through the in-game main menu. Many of them can be seamlessly uninstalled and re-installed according to Bethesda and the mod descriptions, provided they don't mess with your immediate load too much. I tried a new game using only USSEP and alternate start (to get to Riften faster) and confirmed that I was able to get to the Overlook without issues...but I didn't want to continue playing because no mods lol. I'm not using Vortex or MO2.

I'm also having no problems playing the rest of the game, as long as I stay away from the Overlook.

There's a lot of information in that guide and a lot to unpack there so I'll continue looking through it, thanks.

Modding Bethesda games makes me feel like a troglodyte that was hit with the stupid stick

Sorry but that's wrong, I have used Bethesda mods, and they are no more save to remove than any other type of mod, which is to say unless it's a simple texture replacer then it isn't safe to remove midgame....

Bethesda keep putting a message in saying you can remove mods any time despite the fact they themselves admit it isn't safe and is one of the biggest causes of crashes.
They also admit their mods are the same as every other mod.....
Apparently someone in Bethesda hasn't joined the dots yet, and they keep pushing this dangerous, stupid advice..... which you of course wouldn't know is dangerous especially since the inclination is to trust the makers of the game.
I don't know a lot of these mods, so can't comment too much, I am surprised that some of these are on Bethesda's modsite, since there are a couple I thought weren't there any more.

I'm not seeing anything obviously wrong, but maybe someone else will.
Alright, well either way I appreciate the information and advice.
UPDATE: Have finally confirmed that the issue was Maids II: Deception. Without the separate texture packs it requires, it can cause CTD. Have experienced no issues since disabling the mod. Haven't interacted with any of its content in-game so looks like my save is in the clear.
