how many iron daggers have YOU made?!?!?!
so its roughly 2338 daggers to max out smithing with no buffs and we have all done it but how many OVERALL do you think you have made over the years? I have at least made several hundred thousandth if not closer to a mill

I preferred making jewelry and saved all the iron for nails and other building materials. So overall, I've made..2 iron daggers probably. for the blacksmith quest
Yeah I was going to say. Iron is the last thing I would make. More bang for the Buck with Dwarven or Gold.
oh yes, this playthrough I've still got over 700 dwarven bars. Think it's time to start using them.
Side note - nordic maces seem to be quite effective with xp gain relative to resource use
I prefer to make leather braces and then enchant these with petty souls to increase the Enchanting skill. Leather is easier to get by hunting animals, it is more fun, and animals "renew" faster as a resource than iron. I keep the iron for building houses and do much of the building myself, which means I have to forge locks, hinges, and nails a lot. This, too, improves the Smithing skill, and I have to make fewer leather braces overall.

That's the way to go. Save your precious stones and craft jewelry. Smithing goes up based on the value of any item you craft.
I have never tried making iron daggers as an exploit for smithing. It seems like an incredibly boring exercise. I improve smithing by making jewelry as others have mentioned, and upgrading armor and weapons regularly.
Making iron daggers for Smithing XP isn't the way to go anymore. That got patched out of Oldrim LONG ago, before SE was even an idea, so there's no chance SE has it. Making jewelry and expensive armor, though; THAT'S what gets you the Smithing XP.

Yeah making iron daggers hasn't been a thing since 2011. It's since been patched and that's the absolute worst way to level smithing. If you maxed out smithing with iron daggers... I'm sorry for your loss (of time).

Probably only as much as one per character I've created. So I guess around... 20? Maybe 30? Maybe 100 if I consider the possibility of making iron daggers for Banish Daedra/Paralyze enchantments before discovering that I could just exploit the Blacksmith Pickaxe Tactic. If you buy a pickaxe off a blacksmith and sell your enchanted pickaxe to them, the enchantment disappears. I don't use this exploit no more because it keeps me from being able to sell loot that is actually taking up inventory space, but I definitely used it often upon discovery.

I prefer making Leather Armor to Level Smithing. I like making a profit over smelting low-value gear for no/little return. Hoarding the pelts and hides I loot and then just smithing Leather Armor is the best thing for me. Don't need to buy any materials and animals are plentiful to find, so I make a tidy profit and level my smithing a decent amount in one package. Now if we were talking about Leather Armor, that'd probably be in the thousands to hundred thousands. Definitely past the three digits at least.

Jewellry and Dwarven bows (and improving them) is the most effective way to level Smithing. Iron is for hinges, nails, and fittings.

For me early levels are homestead items (nails, etc).. then dwarven or jewelry

Though I often pause crafting till my combat skills are higher and I need better gear made. Too easy to out level a combat skill due to lots of crafting

uhh why in the world would you be making that trash when it was fixed like a month into the game's release all the way back in 2011/2012?

Just go to dwemer ruins, collect scrap metal, smelt it into dwarven ingots. 2 perks into blacksmithing and start crafting Dwarven Bows, and then tempering them. Easy way to 100, really

You can even try getting Ancient Knowledge buff from Unfathomable Depths quest if you want some extra boost
I would always save iron ore to transmute into gold and make jewelry to raise Smithing. Has the added benefit of raising Alteration at the same time, if only a little, and making a lot a selling fodder.
bah, jewelry smith for the win
I mean I am reading all of your posts but...daggers is just faster and cheeper, you go to whiterun, but all the iron from 3 smiths, then go to all the other places, make several hundred daggers, smithing goes up by at least 5, sell several hundred daggers, get speech up less than 10 mins. the dwarven stuff takes at least 30 minutes to get the metal and jewelry is good but you would have to spend several hours getting enough materials to make any meaningful progress, like I have seen the videos and you have to work for awhile before you can actually start the making rings, the iron just goes burr my guy
