SKSE64 errors when trying to launch the game
So, I've finally decided to hop from Legendary to Special Edition, figuring there's enough mods out there now to satisfy my urge to change every tiny little detail in Skyrim. And yeah, there's even some of my favorites ported from LE to SE, and most of them work. What didn't work was SKSE64. Trying this and that, I kept getting "exe version not found" or "you renamed skse64 and not specified runtime", when launching it via SkyrimSE Launcher from Steam. I've spent hours and neared breakdown searching for solutions, and this is what did it for me in the end:

Note: I'm not a savage, I use Linux, Debian, to be precise, but I will dare to assume it'd work regardless of OS or distro one uses.
Now, if someone has met the same problem as I, and would like to try this, presuming you've already downloaded appropriate SKSE64, unzipped it, extracted .dll and .exe skses in [steamapps/common/Skyrim Special Edition] folder, merged "Data" folder within, and ignored "src" folder (unless you're a modder), you can do the following:

Step 1: Navigate to [steamapps/common/Skyrim Special Edition]/Data/skse. If skse folder doesn't exist, create one.
Step 2: Open skse.ini using any text editor. If the .ini file doesn't exist, create new .txt file and name it skse.ini.
Step 3: Add the following lines to skse.ini:
[Loader]
RuntimeName=Skyrim.exe
Step 4: Navigate back to [Skyrim Special Edition] folder.
Step 5: Rename your Skyrim Special Edition executable (SkyrimSE.exe) to Skyrim.exe.
Step 6: Rename your SKSE64 loader executable (skse_loader.exe) to SkyrimSE.exe.

That should do it. Now launch SkyrimSELauncher from your Steam Library and it should run SKSE instead of SkyrimSE. You'll know it works if you see a little popup in the corner of your screen when the game starts, or in-game, under "System" tab, where you should be able to see both current Skyrim and SKSE version.

To be clear, I didn't invent this solution, but I've decided to share it here for easier accessibility since I found it by sheer luck, don't remember where, after hours upon hours of extensive searching. Hope this'll help many others as it did me. A big thank you to the unknown big brain behind it all.

delete the .ini file and revert the .exe files back to their original names. This is what worked for me.

Hey, I know this is an old thread but you likely named your ini file skse.ini.txt by accident, as file extensions are turned off in file explorer by default. In your file explorer control panel if you go to the view option, click on it and then “show” at the very bottom there should be an option for “file name extensions”. Then you should be able to edit the name of your file to skse.ini to actually change it to a configuration file.
