Skyrim Special Edition and Skyrim Anniversary edition same patch?
So the latest version of SSE is 1.6x which when I look at modding is referred to as Anniversary Edition as opposed to SSE which in the mod circles is considered 1.5. I believe the only difference in Anniversary and SSE is the extra DLC content but for modding purposes it's they are the same. Issue I have is that certain mods like Address Library for SKSE Plugins state there are two versions SSE 1.5 and Anniversary 1.6 where I have SSE but the version is 1.6x. Unofficial Skyrim Special Edition Patch says 1.6.629 or greater but that is listed on Steam as Anniversary patch. A bit confused so if anyone can clarify I'd appreciate it.

Also SKSE patch was suggested as 1.6.40 (anniversary Edition) to download, which corresponds with the version of Skyrim SSE I have but then also there is SKSE for SSE 1.5.97. Confused.
1.6.40 is the latest version of SE.

AE upgrade is CC content for SE (paid mods)

When a mod says for AE (it means for the latest version of SE).

1.5.97 is for the older version of SE (before AE update)

There are basically two version of Skyrim SE, with the update and without.

While people incorrectly refer to the 1.6 version as anniversary it is different than the 1.5 version. Some 1.5 mods don't work right with 1.6, but that isn't really an issue anymore, mostly everything that will be updated has been updated, unless you willing didn't update the game you're on the latest version and should using stuff for 1.6 regardless if you bought the DLC or not.

Thanks for the replies. So far the only mods I've installed are the SKSE, Address Library for SKSE Plugins and the latest Unofficial Skyrim Special Edition Patch. Next I was planning on installing SSE Engine Fixes where I suppose I am looking at the 1.6.629+ version even though SE latest version is 1.6.40. From there various mods like SkyUI, RaceMenu, etc. Just want to make sure I'm doing all right from the beginning.

Engine Fixes, as well as the other mods you listed all work on the latest version of the game.

Basically this is how it works but you have to check every mod page to make sure the mod author is using the terminology in the way the modding community uses it.

SE=1.5.97 and lower

AE=1.6.XX

NG=supports everything

GOG=GOG version only

When dealing with AE there's several versions and some mods won't properly work on some AE versions so you'll have to pay close attention to make sure your AE version matches their AE version.

Don't let other people tell you otherwise, this place is filled with people who will give you super bad advice that will cause problems. Use my mini guide here and just pay attention to the mod page, you can't go wrong.

The proper terminology for the game is covered in the PINNED TOPIC Helpful Links and References in the following section:
