Never played an Elder Scrolls game before
Heard lots about this game over the years, and good things about the modding support. Do I need to know anything about the story or the previous games to understand what is going on?

Really, no. Each game is set in their own little area (previous games foreshadow the next and each game gives minor callbacks to what happened before) but you can just jump in and learn as you go.

Bethesda tend to keep it "separate, but not".

What happened in the previous games does have an effect on later games, but it's not a "we pick up where the story left off" kind of game; It's just "this happened 200 years ago, and we're still feeling it" or "someone did this".
Generally, this is noted in books, and maybe the odd dialogue line, but you'll never be left asking "what is even going on?".

You need virtually no knowledge of the previous games to enjoy Skyrim, so enjoy it OP!, it's a good game.

The benefit of playing the other Elder Scroll games before Skyrim, is you will have a better understanding of the world's lore. A decent chunk of the lore can be found in the varied books you will find in the game.

Each game takes place is specific regions of the world Tamriel. Morrowind took place in the region known as Morrowind, Skyrim takes place in the area known as Skyrim. While I havent played the others in the series personally, I believe the naming trend is fairly consistent. The events in Skyrim are not directly connected to any of the events in Morrowind for example, but for overall lore Skyrim takes place later in the history of the world I believe.

You don't need to know the events of prior games to enjoy whats happening in Skyrim.

Thanks for the feedback! I have been enjoying it so far.
The lore that you might find useful is about daedric princes and the 9 divines as they will appear in skyrim. You can find videos about them on youtube or just google to get an understanding. Daedra and the aedra are like gods of The elder scrolls.

you should've played Oblivion or even Morrowind first before playing Skyrim

And any lore developed in earlier games...?.metamorphs? in each game (which leads to spirited discussions at times). The nature of the reality of The game universe supports this. So really you can jump in anywhere.

I don't count Online and Arena is just strange.

Indeed...play the Weaver/Kirkbride stuff before you play the Howard/Providence Equity Partners stuff...as well as watch the Lucas and Roddenberry stuff before the interpretations by folk that never fully watched/comprehended what came before.

PS...I would enjoy some Breyer's ice cream right now...but since Unilever bought them...they are absolute poop. *wink*
