Cant find the white stag

I need to find it because I have the cursed ring of hircine on and I dont want to turn into a werewolf. I keep trying to go where the marker shows the stag but its up in the mountains and inaccessible. Is this a bug? Is there a way to get the stag to show up somewhere else?

If what I saw in the wiki articles is accurate when I was looking up info regarding that ring recently, the random transformation bit of the ring only applies to those that are already werewolves. So that should help with your primary worry.

There are actually a lot of ways up into the mountains, so you might just have to search nearby for a bit and find where you can climb up higher or go through a nearby cave that is actually a pass and has a 2nd exit. There is also a shout you might be able to use to get the stag to come down, if its in a really odd spot and that shout affects it.

So I'm good then regarding becoming not being a werewolf. I have tried climbing up the mountain and trying different routes but no good so far.

Have you tried using a horse to get up to where your marker is pointing? Or whirlwind sprint? Those can sometimes help get to odd areas without having to figure out how to parkour up and along some slopes.

Worst case scenario, you are down your ring slot until you get one of the expansion shouts that can enable getting to even harder to reach spots. Hopefully there is a path up you can find to where it spawned without needing to go that far. Some of the paths up to spots can be a bit tricky to find the first time, and once reach them can then often spot the more intended way up.

I am sadly lacking in shouts or Magik etc. I've only killed 5 dragons so far. I'm level 14 and still haven't explored the skill tree and alchemy etc. I get sidetracked a lot

Thats perfectly fine, its what makes the game fun, going off on those odd sidetracking jaunts. There are tons of things hidden off the beaten path and lots of little paths that also lead to things. I mentioned Whirlwind Sprint specifically because its gotten fairly early on if follow the main quest and it can be extremely handy. With it, a horse, and jumping, there are tons of spots can climb up as long as its not a sheer cliff face, and is hopefully enough to get you to the stag for that quest.

There are a few steep areas around Falkreath that have winding paths that are obscured to get up to without things like that, so hopefully, can find how to get to where you need to go without having to get a much later game expansion shout.
