That said I tried Survival mode and my biggest problem is that Survival isn't configurable out of the box you'll still need mods to let it function ok so why don't use better mods altogether?
Is SunHelm Really Better? I think I took an initial Look (Never actually Tested) and nothing popped out for me.
Only thing that is really missing from Sunhelm is wetness meter. It does not calculate that. However, it calculates the misery of cold water and rainy weather accurately enough that you do not end up missing it.
I would strongly recommend using Survival Control Panel with Sunhelm. Neither Survival or Sunhelm detects cloaks out of the box. Control panel fixes that and allows you to tweak settings more to your liking. SCP is especially useful for Cloaks of Skyrim and Winter is Coming users, but you might want to tweak some item values anyway.

Sunhelm is based on Survival mod. If you want customization, then that is indeed the best option.
