Report a translation problem
Edit: I went back into the game to observe this again. I am able to save. When I move my joystick to the right while in the save tab it defaults to the last save instead of the new save option. If I press A it goes to new save directly. The drum noise happens exactly 16 times and then stops. Only the list of saves flickers, not the entire screen. This is a weird bug. Filed a bug report on the mod page.
I know of what you speak (I never connected it as a problem specific to Skyui and SKYUIAway (I use it also). It very may well be. I get it every once in a great while as well.
Double check SKYUI is enabled
Goto AppData\Local\Skyrim Special Edition and open plugins.txt (any text editor will do). Ensure your SkyUI is enabled by placing an * to its left as shown below.
*iWant Widgets.esl
*SkyUI_SE.esp
*Cutting Room Floor.esp
Your Mod List will be different. Just showing that spot for context. If wordwrap is enabled it will look different.
Initially, SkyUI was just an interface mod, but eventually they managed to create this framework, an extra menu that could easily be used by other authors to add their own options for players to configure in-game.
Most PC users played Skyrim on keyboard&mouse, SkyUI implemented hundreds of QoL tweaks to K&M + MCM - everything was a classic win-win situation.
As already mentioned, there is mod called "SkyUi away" - which will allow you to use the MCM + vanilla interface.
Did you get the "flashing saved games fix" for SkyUI?
That actually takes up a good 3 - 5 minutes of my game prep. After I configure, I have to go through and remove spells for configuration features. Player.removespell. xxxxxxxxx ; Can't automate with a bat file because load order changes play to play. I have the search keywords memorized at this point.
