I dropped SM because of poor-balance, and in my opinion too "simplistic".
Campfire + SunHelm (+ RASS + Winter is Coming) is my favorite combo, it's not over-complex nor simplistic, it's just right.
I've never had any problems, but again, nothing is 100% perfect/bug free.
I used Wet and Cold in Legendary Edition, haven't tested it in SSE yet.. I don't miss it to be honest.
RASS will provide similar visual effects; Winter is Coming distribute capes on NPCs.
I also went with Sunhelm, Campfire, Hunterborn + Hunterborn MCM. They work well together. Only thing that I missed for a while was wetness effects, but I have pretty much already forgotten all about them.
This is a couple days old now, maybe you tried AE survival mode? Similar but yes, bare bones by comparison. Also much more approachable to people who want to SAY they played survival mode than the tedious micro-management of actually stacking survival mods up, so there's that.
