I just got the game on dvd and I'm pretty confused on how to install it because it keeps trying to install steam instead

By around the end of the 2000s, all PC games you bought physical copies of were just blank CDs with a Steam redirect where it would download the game.
There is no game on that disc, just a code that unlocks it for you from steam.

This was the beginning of the pc exclusive launcher market.

Man that's a blast from the past...

I still remember being annoyed having to make a steam account for Skyrim all the way back in 2012... Those were the days.

Yep. That's how I started my STEAM account, after buying DAGGERDALE at Best Buy, bringing it home, and finding out it was an access code for STEAM. (Yeah, I'm the guy who bought Daggerdale)
I hope you purchased a sealed copy.
The disk version comes with a key and a backup installer.
You can use it to install the game, and you need to insert this key into your Steam account, which will allow you to play the game (click Steam > add key).

If you bought a second-hand copy, there's a 99.9% chance that this key was used by the previous owner, so it won't work for you.

Just to be clear, the disc version is OG release/2011:

(your post is in Special Edition, which is a remastered/2016 version, this release is exclusively digital)

Jeez, that was like 15 years ago now.

The twilight years of physical media. You bought CDs for music, DVDs for movies, and video games came on actual discs that held all the game’s files on them…I think the only digital media that never quite caught on was ebooks, people still prefer having a physical book in their hands.

I think the first game I bought that needed Steam was The Orange Box back in 2007.

If you’re not from that time, you wouldn’t believe the amount of verbal resistance (emphasis on verbal) to Steam back then. People were so certain and so afraid that Valve was spying on you for the NSA/FBI, HATED having to be connected to the Internet in order to install/play their games, and were so worried that at any moment, for any reason, they could lose access to the games which they bought.

Skyrim was my first Steam game. I remember the raging arguments people used to have about digital delivery systems and ownership and licences and all that. Some people have to be dragged kicking and screaming into the future. I was hesitant but have never looked back.

?????
The Op is asking about installing from a Disk, are you imagining they have been making new copies?
Ok it's SE but it's still going to be the same thing, insert disk and get routed to Steam to enter the code and create a new account (unless you log into an existing one first)

I installed steam and put in the code and it ends up that someone already redeemed the code and then donated it to a thrift store meaning I wasted 4 dollars on a manual and physical map with no game :/

Could be worse. You could've wasted 10 dollars, like I just did :(

This thread was quite old before the recent post, so we're locking it to prevent confusion.
