Legendary skill and what's the point?
If I set a skill to legendary and it resets all the perk points related to that skill, what's the point? Because you lose all the perks you used to have right? Then you have to start all over again?

I think it only makes sense for a few skills, for example smithing: Once you have reached level 100 and created/upgraded the dragon bone/scale armor and all the fine weapons you have wanted so much, you reset smithing, get some "free" perk points and start learning to smith again to get more XP.

You get the perk points back. The point is that there is now no level cap in the game thanks to legendary, and you don't have to start using skills you don't normally use just to continue leveling

Ok. So can I just reuse the perk points to add back to that same skill?

Perk points are from leveling up. You get levels by increasing skill levels.

With legendary, you can reset a skill level without losing the perk points you got from the level ups you got from training it. You can then get additional perks from training it and leveling up again.

As pyscho said the legendary skills essentially removed the level cap since before it was added you would eventually hit a point where everything was maxed out and it was impossible to level up anymore.

I get it. Thanks so much

You can add them to any skill.

Yes, you get refunded all the perk points you spent in that skill, so you can respend a bunch in that skill right away if you wanted. For skills like one handed and archery, it's a good idea because it increases your base damage if you invest in those damage perks to bring your damage back up. And chances are you're using a strong weapon, so your skill will level back up very quickly because it levels based on the base damage you do.

Some skills are a real pain in the butt to level up again after making legendary (like lockpicking), but as others said, once you get to 100 for a skill you use a lot anyway, like one-handed or smithing or enchanting or alchemy, it will give you additional points to put into other trees as you level up.

You just want to make sure not to legendary all your armor and offensive skills at the same time: you may find yourself a little weak.

It's also easy to level up some mage skills. If you spam Harmony on a bunch of animals once you have it, and spam Soul Trap on everything, you will level up Illusion and Conjuration quickly.

There's a good overview of legendary mechanics here:

Personally I think making a skill legendary is "absurd"! With a single keypress you will loose all that you have learned in a specific skill tree, no matter how easy it may be to regain those skills again. Leveling is based on 2 game settings: fXPLevelUpBase (75 by default) and fXPLevelUpMult (25 by default). Several years ago I started experimenting with these game settings, and with setting the multiplier to a value of about 2.200000, you can reach level 252 without making a skill legendary. Leveling any further is of no use as you are already invincible! Experimenting further at the time, also with skill leveling game settings I managed to get a level 1000+. Then playing the game is no fun anymore! Only backdraw is that you will still see the message to make a skill legendary, but I just ignore it.

I can count on one hand the number of times I used the legendary skill thing with over 2000 hours in skyrim LE.

It's definitely not the most useful thing ever, but its nice for the folks that don't mind the extra grind for levels.

First time I saw that legendary thing in Skyrim, I thought "What the heck?" (trying to be civilized), and immediately started to look for a workaround! With a little drawback, but I just ignore it.

Interesting. So basically just play the game as it comes naturally, right?

If you are referring to me, yeah ... none of those absurd loosing your skills with a single keypress!

I appreciate everyone's input. It's all much clearer now.

Once I had some many armor mods that I crafted all of, I was over level 40 before getting to Whiterun. Nothing like fighting deathlords and murauders with no fighting skills, atleast I was safe in a legendary super cute outfit. I must have had blacksmithing reset a good 20 times :steamfacepalm:
