Gutted can't play Skyrim can anyone help me?
So I haven't played Skyrim for years and was looking forward to a couple of hundred hours on it but I seem to have a bug that I never had before.

The bug is that the mouse keeps losing focus, or actually it's more like specific windows within skyrim lose focus. So for example, I can navigate the menus with the mouse fine, but if I open a quest note then close (with tab) i can no longer navigate the menus. i can re-enable the mouse by clicking on the bar at the bottom (but not any other menu item as it will always just open the original note again). There are loads of other ways to get into this situation and it's so annoying.

I've been through loads of things such as ini changes etc but none have worked.

Can anyone think of something I missed or is it goodbye Skyrim forever?

Thanks

Are you using any mods?

If so, have you updated those mods?

Thanks but no mods. Well except when I've tried using various mods to fix the issue.

Also this is a fresh install, with game files verified.

Have you made sure you have no "Game Controllers", or anything that could be considered a similar piece of kit connected to the PC? If you do, remove them. Skyrim doesn't really like having a controller connected that your not using.
Then, go into the settings menu and make sure that the controller option is *not* ticked. check this, even if you don't have a controller!

Have you made sure nothing else beyond Steam, your AV, and Skyrim are running when the game is? Make sure you quit anything else..
Focus loss is usually caused by something behind taking priority, so it might just be your AV giving you a popup or something...

Are you playing in "Windowed" mode? Or Fullscreen? Try Fullscreen if your in "windowed" or vice versa.

It does sound like something is taking priority though, so IMO it's program in the background causing this from what you describe.

HI Liquid inc many thanks for your response. I read it in detail and I have indeed already tried every single thing you mention. I don't use a controller, have been through all the settings in Skyrim options included controller not being checked. I have tried windowed / borderless / fullscreen. I can't see anything that would be causing focus loss running on my machine, and I try to keep what I do to an absolute minimum (just use windows defender, uninstall one drive etc).

I also looked through the settings in Nvidia Control panel (made sure v-sync was off) all the ini settings e.g. mouse acceleration.

I wonder if it is mouse related but god know what. The only setting I could see in relation to the mouse is enhance pointer precision but turning that off didn't help.

:-(

ps i don't think it would be an application running in windows stealing focus because then it would be random, unless the application that was stealing it many time per second.

pps if I open a quest note (for example) with the return key instead of clicking with the mouse I have no issue i.e. when the note closes I can still use the mouse to scroll menus.

Very bizarre but would appear to be mouse related.

ppps also tried all the various options in windows compatibility in the exe.

Have you tried changing the batteries in the mouse? I know it's a silly question but sometimes the easiest solution is the one that works

disk format and new windows install from scratch is not an option?

sounds like my ex wife:

Her: "We need a new car"
Me: We do not. Why do you say that?
Her: Well it's either that, or you go empty the ashtray in it.

Playing on a new PC after a long break, I've noticed that:
* The mouse cursor on screen is often above where the actual point it will have effect if clicked
* In many menus, there is a delay of maybe 3-4 seconds hovering over an item before a menu item will be selected when clicked
* Where menu items can be selected by cursors, that is often the easiest, and sometimes only option (even if you need to click the mouse to confirm the selection)

These are frustrating, and took time to find the workarounds. Are you suffering the same?
No mods, Razer Viper 8k mouse.

After googled the problem found this:

- how to fix mouse glitch in Skyrim
(try it and reverse it if is not helping)

"Open SkyrimPrefs. ini in Notepad.
Locate [Controls] and then find
'bMouseAcceleration=1'
Change bMouseAcceleration=1 to bMouseAcceleration=0 instead;
this will disable "mouse smoothing" and "mouse acceleration" in Skyrim.12"
from Nov 2011

-

Also
"https://forums.elderscrollsonline.com/en/discussion/583824/losing-mouse-focus-in-game-full-screen-minimizing-to-desktop"

Granted, is ES-online but answered by a developer/moderator:
- Could be related to you PC - Windows.
- Start in Windowed and / or Widescreen / Bordellos : etc to see if it is solved.
-

- Try "game mode" off in Windows settings or "on"
(I keep it "off" due to issues)

- unplug extra monitors when playing Skyrim / Fallout (3,4) etc

hope you solve your problem asap
