How can I remove grass from Hearthfire homes?
The vanilla clumps of grass are really annoying. They pop up into places they shouldn't and look awful in general. I found one mod that removes the grass from Heljarchen Hall but it says it isn't compatible with the Heljarchen Farm mod which I have installed.

I haven't been able to successfully delete them with the console.

I tried the Realistic Grass Field mod and it changes the clumps to real looking grass but only in the same default areas.

What I would like is to have either no grass at all at Hearthfire homes or to have the ENTIRE yard covered in LOW green grass like a lawn.

I could just set the ini file to turn off grass completely but it would turn off all grass in the game and leave it looking like a barren wasteland.

Most grass mods will only change the model used for grass.
What you need are mods (yes plural) that change the placement of grass at each Hearthfires homes you want to change (Which is why I said Plural for the mods).

I don't know of any, but the only way to find them is to look, find them and try them out.... which is time consuming. Also don't forget to make a save before you try them, so you can revert back to it if the mods don't work out.

The only one I have found is Hearthfire Grass Fix and it does mess up the Heljarchen Farm mod. I tried it. And it actually doesn't remove all the grass, just in some areas.

Realistic Grass Field is ok as it makes the grass look like grass instead of clumps of weeds and it is shorter than the clumps but it still looks ugly. I also think it added grass in even more areas.

I was pretty sure I was able to disable grass with console in oldrim but it doesn't seem to be working in SE. That would solve my problem.

there is this one

And No, you couldn't do it with the console in Oldrim either, you could disable ALL grass, but not patches of it.

The mod No Grass in Objects (NGIO) is probably the closest to what you are looking for however NGIO does not work for game version 1.6.xxx (there are some pregenerated versions for specific grass mods) so we are left with mods like Landscape Fixes for Grass Mods, Hearthfire Grass Fix, Grass Fixes for Creation Club Mods, No Grassias, No Grass in Caves, No Grass in Cities, and others, and a mod you might be interested in; Heljarchen Farm Grass Patch.

Be careful about wanting to remove grass because it's not like you can pick & choose precisely where you want. There are many grass mods out there and grass removers are not tailor made to any one single grass mod. Even if there were you have many other mods that can be placed in the world that would alter how and where you wanted grass not to mention IF there were you'd have to accept their personal taste. But there not such mods out there, they are all basically general grass removers that address somewhat specific needs.

But when I say be careful it's because removing too much grass can expose seams in the landscape and some are just plain ugly.

Even with xEdit you can only do so much because xEdit does not give you a visual of what you are editing like the Creation Kit does. So if you want to remove grass in your perfect spots at the very least it's a tedious task and your results will be various degrees of limited.

But back to the ugly seams and errors that grass can hide at times. Take the mod "No Grassias" which comes in 3 versions: NoGrassias, NoGrassias Extended, and NoGrassias Ultimate. I tried all 3 with my setup and none of them removed all of the grass in all of the places I wanted but when using the Ultimate version it removed some grass that exposed some glaring landscape errors so in the end I settled for the base version along with a couple of the mods I mentioned in the beginning of my post.

Basically, the only way to really custom remove grass as you would like is by using the Creation Kit to do so, by changing the terrain type that is in those areas. Best bet is to find a mod that does something close to what you want, and settle for that.

And like I said in my post it's still a bit of a guessing game even with the Creation Kit which I found out first hand a few years ago when I made some edits to remove some unwanted grass. Back then I did find a bit of a useful video by DarkFox on using the CK to remove unwanted grass (look it up) which I'd imagine is till quite useful to this day. None the less it's still a bit of a guessing game and of course all of this is based on each persons load order.

Something else I found out first hand is doing so in 1.6.xxx which makes additional edits to the existing worldspace. So choosing from the mods I listed based of course on your mods in your load order is probably the most likely method.

As Vlad referred to, Darkfox127 is probably the best for tutorials on using the CK. Check out his page here:

I am at work right now, but there IS a mod that removes grass from specific places. That could work as a guideline.

In fact, I am not 100% sure that HF houses do not have such mod.

I am far away from my MO2 and mod archives. Can't remember the name of the mod...

I think mod used Object Swap to remove specific patches of grass?

Found the actual video I was referring to.

Yes it was mentioned earlier in this thread. Several other very good mods for grass removal as well. But it will come down to each individual load order and of course personal preferences. And you do not want to remove too much grass as there is a tipping point where most agree you can expose things you do not want to see.

Apparently I don't see to read well enough without my reading glasses.

Damn age. It just creeps in and causes all sorts of BS.

I know I did in Fallout 4, thought I did in oldrim but that was 2016.

Thanks for all the replies. The creation kit is way beyond me and I'm not even going to attempt that.

Realistic Grass Field was almost what I was looking for. It made the clumps into real looking grass and it was lower so it didn't stick up in areas like the stable at Heljarchen Hall. However, it actually ADDED grass in areas that it wasn't present before. The mod has the ability with ini editing to make more or less grass but even set at 100 which is supposed to be the least it added more grass that wasn't there before.

Looking at this from another angle, are there any mods that completely change the Hearthfire yards? Something that changes it into a giant garden or completely snow covered, etc.? I am using the Heljarchen Pool and Hot Bath EX for SSE but it only adds a pool, greenhouse, wall around the perimeter, etc. It doesn't do anything to the ground.

Are you referring to Hearthfire Grass Fix? It only removed some of the grass and isn't compatible with Heljarchen Farm.
