What you need are mods (yes plural) that change the placement of grass at each Hearthfires homes you want to change (Which is why I said Plural for the mods).
I don't know of any, but the only way to find them is to look, find them and try them out.... which is time consuming. Also don't forget to make a save before you try them, so you can revert back to it if the mods don't work out.
Realistic Grass Field is ok as it makes the grass look like grass instead of clumps of weeds and it is shorter than the clumps but it still looks ugly. I also think it added grass in even more areas.
I was pretty sure I was able to disable grass with console in oldrim but it doesn't seem to be working in SE. That would solve my problem.

And No, you couldn't do it with the console in Oldrim either, you could disable ALL grass, but not patches of it.
Be careful about wanting to remove grass because it's not like you can pick & choose precisely where you want. There are many grass mods out there and grass removers are not tailor made to any one single grass mod. Even if there were you have many other mods that can be placed in the world that would alter how and where you wanted grass not to mention IF there were you'd have to accept their personal taste. But there not such mods out there, they are all basically general grass removers that address somewhat specific needs.
But when I say be careful it's because removing too much grass can expose seams in the landscape and some are just plain ugly.
Even with xEdit you can only do so much because xEdit does not give you a visual of what you are editing like the Creation Kit does. So if you want to remove grass in your perfect spots at the very least it's a tedious task and your results will be various degrees of limited.
But back to the ugly seams and errors that grass can hide at times. Take the mod "No Grassias" which comes in 3 versions: NoGrassias, NoGrassias Extended, and NoGrassias Ultimate. I tried all 3 with my setup and none of them removed all of the grass in all of the places I wanted but when using the Ultimate version it removed some grass that exposed some glaring landscape errors so in the end I settled for the base version along with a couple of the mods I mentioned in the beginning of my post.
Something else I found out first hand is doing so in 1.6.xxx which makes additional edits to the existing worldspace. So choosing from the mods I listed based of course on your mods in your load order is probably the most likely method.

In fact, I am not 100% sure that HF houses do not have such mod.
I am far away from my MO2 and mod archives. Can't remember the name of the mod...

Damn age. It just creeps in and causes all sorts of BS.
Realistic Grass Field was almost what I was looking for. It made the clumps into real looking grass and it was lower so it didn't stick up in areas like the stable at Heljarchen Hall. However, it actually ADDED grass in areas that it wasn't present before. The mod has the ability with ini editing to make more or less grass but even set at 100 which is supposed to be the least it added more grass that wasn't there before.
Looking at this from another angle, are there any mods that completely change the Hearthfire yards? Something that changes it into a giant garden or completely snow covered, etc.? I am using the Heljarchen Pool and Hot Bath EX for SSE but it only adds a pool, greenhouse, wall around the perimeter, etc. It doesn't do anything to the ground.
