Questions on unofficial patch and console commands
I've run into the issue where the greybeards are sending me to word walls that's I've already been to, and the google searches I've done indicate that the only fixes are to download the unofficial patch or use console commands, but that leaves me with a few questions about which is a better option.

First, if i go with the unofficial patch do i need to start a new game, or will downloading it fix the existing quest that's pointing me to an already completed word wall? And if i do download it, will it disable achievements?

Second, if I use the console commands, which one? I've never used the console commands and after looking over the list i have no idea which one i should be using. And, will using the console commands also disable achievements?

For reference, I'm running the current vanilla version of the special addition . Any advice would be appreciated.

The console commands are easier, and have far less "impact" on game play, I thimk the command u want is CompleteQuest..... You need to find out the quest stage from a wiki then use the"SetStage" command.. Plenty of step by step guides if u get lost.

If they're sending you to Arcwind Point, console isn't going to help you. They'll just keep sending you over there, no matter how many times you use the console to "complete" it. Trust me, I've tried. So if that's the place they're sending you to, you might have better luck just installing the Unofficial Dawnguard Patch unfortunately. I don't use mods though, so that's usually the point where I just stop asking them.

The console command you'll want to use is: SetStage FreeFormHighHrothgarA 20. But if they're sending you to Arcwind Point, don't be surprised if they never stop sending you there...

Didn;t know that, bizzare... Mor ya know, BTW did you try the "Complete quest command, or just Set stage? coz usely u need to set the stage to 200.. Complete Quest is a separate command to Set stage

Unofficial patch prevents bugs from developing, but can not fix bugs that are already in the game.

And yes it will disable achievements unless you have achievement reenabler mod or SSE Engine fixes (but not both as they clash trying to do the same thing) which would reenable them.

Thank you all for the replies. Yes, it was Arcwind point, so i just went ahead and reloaded to a save before the quest was given. Cost me an hour or two of play, but that's better than the alternative.

I was hoping to get through a full vanilla play through before using any mods (and up until now hadn't encountered any serious bugs), but i think I'm going to need to get the unofficial patch (and the achievement reenabler mod) before i go any further.

SSE Engine fixes include the achievement enabler. It does require running the game through SKSE64, but it will fix several problems, without changing the game play.

There are plenty of issues and oversights to fix, but with USSEP and SSE Engine fixes you would be quite well set to play, without worst issues and annoyances.

Edit: Oh and you will finally get lip sync back at the top of it. Don't tell me that you had not noticed that. :ShockedOwlcat:
