Use SKSE.silverlock.org then select the version that corresponds to your game version.

In case you are having the same problem as I, and still cannot see Vlad's comment after 10 minutes of analysis by steam...

No, the steam version of SKSE is for Oldrim only, you need to get the proper version for SSE from:

https://skse.silverlock.org/

Current Anniversary Edition build 2.2.3 (game version 1.6.640)

Is the one you want for the current steam version of SSE.

Thanks. Turns out you can get it from Nexus as well

You should only get SKSE from skse.silverlock.org , the developers themselves. That's the way to get the correct and up to date versions.

The current SE build from silverlock is not compatible with the latest version of the game.

Of course it is compatible. I and many others are using it now.

Match game versions, for the current version of SSE they mistakenly label the correct SKSE as for AE.

SSE 1.6.640 uses SKSE 2.2.3.

Yes it is, the devs of skse are just being intentionally obtuse in their wording and adding confusion for no reason whatsoever. The anniversary edition as they call it is the latest updated version of the special edition. There is no difference between the anniversary edition or special edition when it comes to versions, they're the same thing.

Wow that's really helpful of them... Anyway the nexus version is also up to date.

Until it isn't. If you are going to get SKSE from the nexus make sure you are matching up version numbers.

I honestly don't know how quick the nexus page for that gets updated, but it certainly isn't before their site is updated.

The file on Nexus was uploaded by the developers (Ian Patterson), the files are exactly the same:
https://www.nexusmods.com/skyrimspecialedition/mods/30379

I'm not sure why they took so long to upload to NexusMods though, my only guess is because the Nexus Mod Manager couldn't install it.
Vortex mod manager was released in open Beta in late-2018 - with native SKSE support, and they finally uploaded SKSE on NexusMods in 2022.

Official announcement by the NexusMod team:
https://www.reddit.com/r/skyrimmods/comments/y1ioof/skse_is_now_available_on_nexus_mods/

TL;DR: both sites, Silverlock and NexusMods are official/same file.

I personally prefer to avoid all the hassles of manual installing the skse’s (after many reinstalls over the years). Save your self a headache and just use Wabbajack mod installer it works wonders and has some of the most popular mod packs for skyrim
