Left Soul Cairn Without Talking to Durnehviir
Quite some time ago I finished the Dawnguard questline but in the process of doing this, I bypassed Durnehviir and simply left the Soul Cairn without talking to him. As a result, I didn't learn the shout he teaches, which of course is both a great shout and a steam achievement to complete it.

Is it possible to speak with Durnehviir on a return trip to the Soul Cairn? I went back and could not find him around the place where we previously fought.

Alright found an ancient thread that may have the answer to this particular issue. Just gonna copy their step-by-step process here for you to try if enabling him does nothing.

1. Location: go to boneyard
2. Open Console
3. Type: resetquest dlc1vqdragon
4. Then type : setstage dlc1vqdragon 30
5. Close console

According to them, this should put Durnehviir back in the same position he was in to teach you the shout. Haven't tried this myself so I can't claim it to be legit (also I already have the shout, so I don't think it'd work anyways), but it's something.

You should be able to find him by the "Word Wall" that had a boss chest and Saint Jiub page. As for if he'll teach you the shout... I don't know. I never simply left when Durnehviir. reappeared. If he's not there, maybe you just screwed up by avoiding him altogether.

He does have his own word wall, it's not in the castle or right outside where he first talks you you however. It's off to the left of the castle, it shouldn't be hard to find as he should be sitting on top of it.

I don't know of that will prompt the original dialogue or give you his shout but that is where he should be.

Sadly he is not there. The chest and word wall were of course present but he was not.

Maybe you have a mod that's changing this......
Otherwise the best I can advise is to load a save from before the fight with Durnehvir and hope he appears after you get the scroll from Serena's mother..... He has always appeared in front of me when I exit that area....

I'm not using any mods. The issue is that I left the Soul Cairn and finished the Dawnguard questline (along with a lot of other content) and only recently realized that I missed talking to Durnehvir when I originally left.

Reloading a save is an option for the achievement but getting the shout isn't worth replaying all the content that I completed after the Soul Cairn.

The issue is you could leave the bit where Serena's mother is without speaking to Durnehvir, it's a scripted event...... It should be impossible to do, unless a mod is changing it.

It's not impossible to do. You can avoid Durnehvir entirely by simply not approaching him close enough to trigger the dialogue.

I remember this explicitly. I expected to have to fight him a second time and didn't want to go through it all over again, so I just ran past him and left the Soul Cairn. I only just the other day realized I missed out on getting the shout because it's linked to an achievement and I've been checking them off.

Do you actually care about the shout at all or is it just for the achievement?
If you only what the achievement you could reload that old save, get the shout get the achievement and then stop, go back to your recent save.

I do actually care about getting the shout. It would also be a lot faster then reloading the last save I have which would require me to replay the main quest inside the Soul Cairn.

He always starts the dialogue the moment I move two steps away from the door,,,,
Ok so it is possible.... if going back hasn't triggered his dialogue then either load an old save or chalk it down to experience.

Okay, so, I'm getting very frustrated here because I feel like I've explained this several times in this thread and went back and re-read my original post and it seems perfectly clear to me. My question was:

Is it possible to speak with Durnehviir on a return trip to the Soul Cairn?

I've already done the research on how acquiring the shout is supposed to happen. I KNOW I can get the achievement by loading an old save. I'm asking if there's a way to find Durnehviir after leaving the Soul Cairn for the first time and returning on a subsequent trip.

For example, maybe Durnehviir moves to a different location within the Soul Cairn after you leave and someone knows where that is. Maybe there's a console command that resets his position. That's the information I'm looking for - not simply how to get the achievement by reloading an old save. That's what I'm trying to avoid.

His post basically just said that if he's not there when you go back, either load earlier save or chalk it up to experience - aka you're screwed.

Right, his post didn't answer my question. It told me to do exactly the thing I am trying to avoid doing - aka not helpful and why I'm frustrated.

Thanks for the attempt - Durnehviir just isn't there.
