If you get yourself a house, every container inside said house should be safe for you.
Without mods I believe the house in Whiterun will be your quickest and cheapest option, just follow the beginning of the main quest and you'll get the option to buy it after you help kill your first dragon.

^^Player homes are the best option. If for some reason you want to dump stuff in the world at large see https://en.uesp.net/wiki/Category:Skyrim-Places-Safe

Thank you. I found a place using that link. I'm using the master chest at Dustman's Cairne.

Give me your items. I can be trusted with them.

OMG lol !! You actually saved me. Because of your comment I fast traveled to that chest and realized I couldn't, it wasn't Dustman's Cairne, it was the chest on the surface behind that place, the one where that Drago skeleton breaks out of a vertical coffin lol. I grabbed everything and now looking for a new stash lol. ( fist bump )

If you're looking for a free spot to store your stuff in the base game (no mods, no paid Creation Club content), Anise's Cabin[en.uesp.net] is a good choice. It comes with a bed, crating stations, and a couple safe containers. You have to defeat a single enemy to use it, but most players will do this sometime around level 1 or 2 as they scout the area around Riverwood.

I was looking for a place to store my items before buying breezehome, this helped a lot. Thanks!

One arrow to the Talos preacher's head buys you a free house to store things in.

With CC, there are places that have safe storage? I don't mind using CC
Careful to not place items in chests outside of your homes. After few days gone by. items will reset in chests. Basically getting rid of whatever you placed in there.

Any junk you've gathered in the early stages is essentially useless and replaceable by better junk as you move through the game. So quit being a packrat and sell that stuff. Money/septims talks.
..just sayin'

Anise's cabin is generally the easiest first "safe house' to store stuff in the dresser, NOT THE BARRELS. also, keep in mind there is a "world event" very near the building, so every time you travel there you will run into some event every time you walk out the front door and walk straight ahead. some of those events are a bit annoying when you are low level.

if you have the anniversary edition or just the cc installed there is several new safe places, that also have crafting stations you can use without actually "owning" the house.. tundra homestead is just outside whiterun, has a couple chests you can store stuff in just by walking up to them, crafting stations, and even a garden you can grow ingredients in.

goldenhills plantation is not only free, you can actually make a crazy amount of money from it over time... you need to do a rather short (like maybe 10 minutes the first time) quest to get it, but storage, and especially after the upgrades you can do.

also, join any of the guilds and you very very quickly get a bed and a couple storage chests.

Always remember people, beat Uthgerd in a fight nets a a reasonable early game follower + a house key to her house. Not all storage there is safe, but the desk to the right after entering her house sure is safe, used it dozens of times. Chest upstairs sure ISN'T safe, had to learn that the hard way.
