ENBs
I installed ENBseries and LightENB and my game crashes every time I go through a loading screen door. So I uninstalled both and same thing happens. I don't claim to know anything but I'm not new to modding. Game was working fine with over 70 mods using MO2 but I haven't used and enb before. Watched guides by Gopher, ESO and a few others and thought i followed them perfectly.

Skyrim is 1.6.640
How do I determine whether an enb will work post AE?

If it's version 1.6 or higher then use the AE version (even if it is incorrectly named)

I've looked at a bunch of enbs made this year; none of them have said anything about SSE version. How the heck am i supposed to know if they'll break my game?

it can be confusing yes, but for Skyrim 1.6.640 you only need the latest enb binaries.
Just to be sure, do you have multiple ENB related mods? There are some mods (ENB helper comes in mind) that uses ENB but is not compatible with the current version AFAIK

This is the main page for Skyrim SE
- http://enbdev.com/download_mod_tesskyrimse.html
clicking on the latest version brings you to

scroll down to the bottom, there's a "download". Extract and use "wrapper" version if you're using Windows.

Ensure that older enb's are removed;
Go to "Steam\steamapps\common\Skyrim Special Edition". Then look for "enbseries" folder. Delete all content in that. Then open another explorer, find the "wrapper" and copy (with overwrite) all of its content to that "Steam\steamapps\common\Skyrim Special Edition" folder. Then install your ENB mods on top of that.

I haven't touched enbhelper; not even downloaded.

The second paragraph I've done. I have version 483

I removed everything enb related. Game crashes on any load screen once in game.

Repeated stuff in last paragraph. Still crashes.

Maybe there is some leftover file. Time for a clean install and see if I can figure it out. So as long as I use the current version of enbseries and don't use enb helper, any actual enb mod should work? If not, how do I tell?

Ha, tried verifying files; now it won't load at all or even start a new game.

verifying the integrity does not remove loose files placed in that directory. It's best to delete the files individually and start anew.

But I am curious about something; can you tell where you have installed your Steam and Skyrim SE? If it is in program files, then you have to install it on a different location.

No, it's not program files; it's an entirely new drive.

I'm asking that because ENB works by injecting code at a application in runtime. If the game is installed in Program Files, Windows does not allow this, unless you give it appropriate rights.

Since you have said it's on a new drive, are you sure that there are no loose files anymore?

There probably were but I couldn't find them. I did a clean install and will start over with enbs first so I don't screw up my mod work again.
