The purpose of multiple playthroughs?
Since Skyrim is a game where you can pretty much max all the playstyles and do everything in one playthrough, is there any reason to do a second playthrough?

Lots of reasons, like it is a fun game to play. Also, there are mods if things start to get stale.

My current playthrough has me being an Altmer who disagrees with the way the Dominion is handling things. It has forced me to flee. I am now in Skyrim, sympathetic to the Empire. Ignoring the big/main quests for now, trying to keep a low profile farming at Rorikstead on my own farm with 40 plantable plots.

I am just now, at level 11 starting to branch out a bit. As I type this I am working on exposing Alva in Morthal. I will eventually build Windstad Manor and "stumble" across a mine just north of Ustangrav which is full of bandits.

Due to its proximity to my home I will of course clear it out. I will find a note/journal which tells me I can purchase this mine. I will do so and sink much coin into it repairing and expanding it.

Once I have all the hired miners/guards etc, it will be a nice semi passive income as I continue to clean up the roads and help the citizens.

What do I get for all my good work and status climbing? Certainly now a house in the Cloud District, no sir. I get TAXED.

As I get more and more wealthy, my small farm in Rorikstead will no longer be enough for me. I will save enough coin to purchase, repair and upgrade a much larger farm near Whiterun.

At some point I will build Lakeview Manor and live in luxury enjoying the;

Amenities
  • Heated pool and bathtub with autostrip and reequip only for followers and other NPCs
  • Idle markers for NPCs
  • Outdoor kitchen and dining area
  • Garden with 30 plantable plots
  • Alchemy and enchanting tables
  • Proper ambient lighting
  • Wheat mill to produced flour
  • Boat shack (formerly a necromancer's altar)
  • Perimeter lighting
  • Proper patrol paths
  • Full defense perimeter wall and sentry tower
  • 8 full-time sentries allied only to you (that is, no allegiance to anyone but your character and your friends)
  • Some shade trees after clearing off trees that are too large
  • Retractable gate barriers
  • Built-in gate flamethrowers
  • Heat controls for hot tub
  • Heated pool and bathtub

I will also join the Legion and help put down Ulfric and his rebellion.

This.
I've started several new characters (although only finished the main story plus the wars questline once). Took a long break from Skyrim then came back to my favorite sandbox game and this time am taking Ulfric's/Stormclocks side rather than Imperial's. I'm not sure why I never did that the first time around tbh..possibly because I was noob and assumed Imperial was the way to go - especially as Whiterun was under Imperial occupancy.

Plus there's playing other class types - I always go back to warrior class types but keep meaning to do a mage or spellsword type character.

Plus the mods of course. Taking breaks from the game keeps things fresh..with many of the quests I have to remind myself what the outcome is.. plus you can take different sides in quests.

I prefer to make characters that make some kind of sense. I stick to a specific set of skills, and I only do certain quests with that character. Most of the time the quests I do is associated with their alignment. I don't do the evil quests as a good character for instance. The skillset I choose often dictates which quests I do too. I don't make warriors do the college of winterhold quest line, and mages don't join the companions.

Granted, the game doesn't really enforce any of this, and outside of the civil war questlines and the dawnguard main quest, there is nothing preventing you from just doing all the quests in the game with one character. But I'm used to thinking about what makes role-playing sense, rather than what makes practical sense.

Lately, I've been enjoying going the "dead is dead" route, so I play more new characters than some. Like others, I tend toward the quest lines that my character is designed for. For instance, this time I started as a Whiterun guard, so I do a lot of standing around, waiting for bandit raids. (I have mods that make bandits and enemy encounters a pretty common thing.)

setting your own goals makes for challenging gameplay too. Of my 4 current saves ( All using the Live Another Life mod) , I have:

rich as hell thief/assassin ( finished Thieves Guild and DB stories only)
an Imperial Soldier ( finished the Imperial story, lv 1 run through)
a pure mage build ( just started, going all magic and magic only)
wandering adventurer ( the classic 'go here, get work, get paid )

Not a single one of these play throughs involved the Dragonborn aspect of the game at all.

mods, vampire/dawnguard, stormcloak/imperial, rpg (mage or stealth or warrior (NOT playing as a jack of all trades))

Yeah I always made very specific characters the moment I first started playing the game. It keeps things more immersive for me.

I've played through the original Skyrim....probably 2 or 3 times; Skyrim LE......same, 2-3 times; but Skyrim SE? I'm already on my 5th playthough. All involved different characters. But since I'll probably play it through again, I'll be keeping my current character.

As somebody mentioned.

Roleplaying is such a great way to pass the time. Don't want to be the Dragonborn and just a normal person? There are plenty of mods for that.
Vlad 254 Aug 19, 2019 @ 7:02pm
You also can play as a Nord, Argonian, Orc, or many different races not to mention male or female of each. I won't list the many other reasons as many of them have already been mentioned. Heck this may have been mentioned already but I didn't see it. But there are so so many reasons if you choose. If not, that's fine too.

Then there's Alternate Start.

Like a few here have said, "Roleplaying" is plentiful in this game with so many mods and the free roam on the HUGE map for hunting and other mods like iNeed, Frostfall, Campfire ect. is a bonus.

In addition to the civil war and dawnguard, there are other quests that have choices/multiple outcomes (In My Time of Need, for example), and so doing a single playthrough doesn't give you the full experience.

But in addition to multiple sides for quests and roleplaying, Skyrim has a lot to explore - I was finding new places I hadn't seen before after 1500+ hours in the game.

If you think you'll be bored, you can always look into mods - Nexus Mods has tons of stuff, from mods that make small changes (improving graphics) to mods that add whole new lands and quests.
