Installing unofficial patch.
I tried to install the unofficial patch manually, as this is the only patch I plan to install. I followed the instructions and unzipped the files to D:\Steam\Steamapps\common\skyrim special edition\data, note all of my Steam games on on the D drive.

After the unzip a new folder appeared in the Data folder: Unofficial Skyrim Special Edition Patch-266-4-2-8-1663527575. All of the files mentioned in the install instructions appear in this new folder, not in the Data folder. Is this supposed to happen?

When I run Skyrim and go into the Mods option, it immediately tries to make me sign into Bethseda.net, which I don't really want to do. If I try to get around this by going into the "load order" selection, then it shows I have no mods.

It appears to me that I need to move the files in the /Data/Unofficial Skyrim Special Edition Patch-266-4-2-8-1663527575 folder up into the /Data file. Any ideas on this?

Why are you doing it the hard way when you can use a mod manager. Better to use one to install mods and sort them with with loot. Mo2 or vortex.

What FEAR said. Unless you are experienced (and much of the time even if you are), you should not be installing mods manually.

If you intend to have this mod only and not using a mod manager to aid you to install your mods, it is okay to do that, just not recommended. If you want to do it manually, have a separate dedicated folder for your extractions. Then for USSEP you need to have the content in Data folder, so basically these four must be present in the "Data" folder. The other files can be ignored (one needs Wyre Bash - a tool - and the other is just documentation stuff).
Unofficial Skyrim Special Edition Patch - Textures.bsa Unofficial Skyrim Special Edition Patch.bsa Unofficial Skyrim Special Edition Patch.esp Unofficial Skyrim Special Edition Patch.ini

Then you have to enable this plugin. This can be done by adding "Unofficial Skyrim Special Edition Patch.esp", at the bottom, in a "plugins.txt" file (launch your game for the first time to generate it) in this folder
C:\Users\<your name>\AppData\Local\Skyrim Special Edition
(or use the bEnableFileSelection thing - and then go by launcher - google it)

Agree with smr1957 and Fear. Use a mod manager. Life's too short to mess around with manually installing mods.

Open Data.
Open the folder that was created in Data in a new window by right-clicking on it and selecting Open In New Window.
Move everything out of that folder into Data.

Use vortex to install, it's very user-friendly

It is. I've been using it for years.

The instructions on the installation of the unofficial patch sounded like it was not that difficult and I only wanted this one mod. Apparently those instructions are wrong, because nothing occurred as stated in those instructions.

I did try to use the Vortex download, but it wanted to download additional files and I very much dislike downloading things and having to create accounts all over the place. So I am just abandoning this whole attempt.

Frankly I am very peeved at Bethesda for continuing to sell content related to the game, but not fixing the bugs that would make this patch unneeded. Would it be so hard for them to simply buy the patch and release it as a Steam patch?

It would be very complicated legally, but regardless Bethesda has shown no interest in such.

As for how easy, really all you needed to do was get the files in the data folder regardless of the method, that folder was created because some software for unzipping archives have settings to extract into a new folder named after the archive.

And if you only wanted to install this one mod, you could have used the in game mods menu which also has the patch.

Unofficial Skyrim Patch has plugin-file (those are either esp or esl).

Plugin files need to be placed directly in Data-folder and registered in plugins.txt that is located in your AppData/Local/Skyrim Special Edition/ folder

If does not exist - create it.

Inside the file you need a simple list of *NAME_OF_PLUGIN.esp, just like that with the star. Basically looking like that:
*mod0_plugin.esp
*mod1_plugin.esl
.....
etc

That is about it. There is nothing complex about manual mod managing, you only need to know about the plugins.txt file....
