Wow, Skyrim in HDR is pretty!
I just recently got me an ultrawide monitor, which also supports HDR, and little did I know, Skyrim actually supports HDR! I thought I was done with the game, because I have played Skyrim since the vanilla version, through SSE, to AE. And now this... Skyrim just does not stop giving :steamhappy:

If anyone had told me HDR would not be worth it I would have believed them, thinking it is only 2 bits more per colour. It is however quite a surprising difference.

So both thumbs up to Bethesda for supporting it!

Great! when I installed Skyrim, it wouldn't even recognize my resolution.

Now poney up for that kind of Worship of Bethesda :lunar2019laughingpig: Get everyone an Ultrawide Monitor, so we can Droolez together! :lunar2019grinningpig:

It is actually the one thing you do not need. You need Windows 11, the right graphics card, the right monitor and the right cable for working HDR support, before you can think about playing games with it. Hence my surprise to see Skyrim having HDR support when so many other games do not. I really only got me the ultrawide resolution for watching videos. I had to install a mod to get the ultrawide resolution working properly for Skyrim (SkyUI will otherwise suck).

Already have Win11...

Come on, Poney up! I want the pretty picture too! Lol

Joking. I actually was able to fix the resolution issue using my Nvidia Geforce Experience thing. now work like a charm.

FYI your resolution settings can change sometimes by itself for Skyrim SE, a quick correction in the .ini fixes it though.

The issue I had was when you click on the launcher? And look at Setting? There is no resolution. The only thing I had was Windowed Mode. Using the Nvidia thing, I was able to set it to my monitor resolution.

Not meaning to advertise for any specific manufacturer, but ... I got me a cheap LG monitor with a moderate 29" size (UWHD+IPS+HDR10) for just $200. No need to go begging for it at that price imo. There are definitely better ones than this one, but for anyone who wants to replay Skyrim should they try it with HDR.

You bought a brand new $2500 PC just for Skyrim, didn't you? :praisesun:

I wish!! I am still playing with an Nvidia GTX960, which is probably a decade old now. The card had 10-bit per colour channel back then already. One just could not buy a 10-bit display for an affordable price.
(Nor are most 10-bit displays actually true 10-bit, but 8-bit plus temporal dithering. However, this now beats the older 8-bit displays, which themselves often only do 6-bit plus temporal dithering.)

LOL. I don't think anyone buys a $2,500.00 rig JUST for Skyrim. I think gamers do whenever they can afford it (and sometimes when they can't). I think it's more about other games (if you're a gamer) and about future proofing.

But I did get a good laugh out of your comment if that's what you were going for (which I suspect you were)

Edit to add: I just spent 3 grand on a new rig and the one thing that bugs me is I didn't need it to play the game I play most which is Skyrim. But I do play other more demanding games and look to play more new games over the next few years. But yeah, NOT needed for Skyrim.

used to use GeForce/optimize for skyrim. But, lately I can only get 3440x1440 by not optimizing, my ini shows 3440x1440 and it works fine without optimize????

Skyrim does not have HDR support, you're most likely using Window 11's AutoHDR which can inject into numerous games.

It actually does and it has done so for the gaming consoles for a while now (see also SkyrimPrefs.ini:bUse64bitsHDRRenderTarget=1). It now also supports Windows 11 AutoHDR, which many PC games do not support. There are then Skyrim mods to further enhance HDR on the PC including ENBs.

Not bad for "fake" HDR right? I've been enjoying that action on the series x since launch and I love it. I love Dolby Vision even more but....

Recently I've been playing fable 1-3 at 4k60 and it's amazing. For some reason that series is either HDR or 60 not both BUT if you want a good example of both then the 1st Red Dead Redemption and the zombie expansion are amazing in HDR at 4k60.

I don't know what kind of voodoo algorithm Microsoft wrote but it's fantastic black magic.

Its only part of the insider's build on windows 10 right now but does Win11 have a way to calibrate HDR?

I ask because if it does then I'll dual boot and take advantage of HGIG which looks way better than Tone Mapping because the gamma colors and black's/peak whites are more accurate than using just tone mapping. HGIG for anyone who doesn't know just means it's HDR that is calibrated at the system level so if a game (or all movies) support it then you don't have to tweak settings on the display like you do when it doesn't have calibration and you have to use tone mapping.

Skyrim aside the auto HDR function in the Xbox and Win11 (soon 10 too) should work on basically everything dx9 or later. If it doesn't already it will soon. If it doesn't work it's because it probably breaks something. That's the only reason anything from modern all the way back to original Xbox games on series x wouldn't have HDR or DV support. It's actually pretty rare.
