No couriers
Hi, Pretty new to the PC world but need a little help with the SKyrim couriers. I'm level 36 now and have only ever had a letter via courier once in the game. So I'm pretty sure they've either died and not respawed, got stuck somewhere or the game has glitched or something. After googling I've tried uninstalling Hearthfire but that won't let me load the game until Hearthfire has been reinstalled...

Please could any advise be shared on how to fix the couriers?

How did you uninstall Hearthfire from SSE?

Just no.

Try verifying the game's Master files. And uninstalling any of the inherent content will break the game (as will uninstalling the vast majority of mods midplaythrough).

For verifying, see this:

If you have SSE do NOT attempt to remove the DLCs from the game, they are baked into the game and it can cause issues trying to remove them.

I am pretty sure the Courier is not a set individual. They are spawned at need. Deliver the messaged then hang around the area until you leave the cell and then despawn. The courier found out in the Random Encounters traveling on the road can die without affecting future couriers.

Of course if you have Courier based mods installed.. All bets are off.

If you kill the courier they stop spawning...... pretty sure the courier IS a specific individual.

I would test it out but I have Pretty Courier so not sure I can. I do know the Couriers on the road are the old vanilla ones and I have found them dead quite alot.

The actual courier that delivers messages is randomly selected from several possible races and is set to essential. See:
https://en.uesp.net/wiki/Skyrim:Courier

Obviously, any mod that touches the courier can change this - intentionally or not.

You don't need to test it out, there was a thread about a year ago, someone killed the courier and discovered they stop spawning if you do that......

edit: there was no fix by the way, they had to reload a save from before they killed the courier and lost many weeks worth of playing.

The only way they could have killed the courier is if they used a mod to make them killable - because otherwise - since they are essential - they can't be killed. And, needless to say, once you use a mod that allows things which the game doesn't - well, anything can happen - and not usually good. Unless, of course, they meant the courier who is just a random NPC you see in bars and around, who have nothing to do with the actual courier who delivers messages - but they have literally no effect on the game, they are just "color".

It was either a mod or console command, they went out of their way to kill the courier..... I do not recommend it because as I said the courier stops spawning..... I remember it because it wasn't something you could do by accident.

Yeah - LOL!. Well, in that case, it doesn't matter. If people do things to break the game, that's their issue, and not something anyone here needs to respond to - except with the good old "load a previous save" or "start a new game".

So, Violetbluejaye, unless you have a mod that effects the courier, or have used some command or removed a mod mid-playthrough, the courier should be there. If you used a command or removed a mod, you will need to roll back to a save made before that - or start a new game. If you have not done any of these things, the first thing I suggest you do is validate the master files:

I haven't been using any mods as I didn't want to disable the achievements, the only commands I have used are to add iron ingots and leather strips.... Would those two commands effect he courier?

Those commands won't have any effect on the courier. And there are mods you can use that enable the ability to get achievements again when using mods.
