Possible Bug, Finn's Lute Quest Log not updating if the item is found before quest.
Playing unmodded Skyrim SE. I have somehow found the Lute before actually picking up the Quest at the Bards in Solitude, then later turned it in, got my reward but the quest log became stuck.

The instruments they ask you to find are buggy. Don't pick them up unless you have already gotten the appropriate quest. (Just avoid picking up name instruments.)

Finding the lute early may also result the quest objective becoming stuck in your journal, even after returning the lute and receiving your reward. This bug is fixed by version 1.2.1 of the Unofficial Skyrim Patch.

To resolve this, click on the "I've found Finn's Lute" option in dialogue when you speak to Inge, rather than the "Why are you sad?" option. It works out just as if you had accepted the quest and then found it.

Alternatively, you can use the console code setstage BardsCollegeLute 40 after accepting the quest, which will update it to telling you to give Inge the lute, allowing the quest to proceed as normal.

The Unofficial Patch fixes that.

Have to gnash your teeth on that stuff. I did the same thing, was trying to turn it in and Skyrim pulled the "Why are you sad?" option back in. So I got the lute turned in, got the benefits (just like you said), but now still have the quest to go find it again. Sigh. I wasn't doing a lot of regular saves, so I can't go back to an earlier save without playing a lot of stuff over again. Oh, well.

late to the party, but I have the same problem. problem is, I don't wanna have achievements disabled and I think both the patch mod and the console code will do just that. any solutions for that?

Console commands do not and never have disabled achievements in any Elder Scrolls game. While using mods will, there are other mods that enable the ability to get achievements again when using mods. So getting achievements when using mods has always been a possibility.

However, the last update was bugged and apparently there is no proper Steam integration, so getting any achievements at all might be a problem at the moment, even with an unmodded game.

Oh okay, console command it is. It's just that the console literally says 'the use of some commands will disable achievements' lol. As for the bug you mentioned with the update, I was still unlocking achievements yesterday. Thanks for the clarification though!
