How to use Kahvozein's Fang to collect heart scales?

I am trying to complete the 2nd part of the mage quest where you have to collect a heart scale. every dragon I kill either with it or with magic has no heart scale(s) I even tried hitting the corpse with it before it gets absorbed but it still has no heart scale(s). What am I doing wrong? Do I have to be at a certain point in to the story quest line before it work? I watched a few videos where people killed a dragon and hit the corpse with the dagger and they got one instantly.

Haven't done this quest, but the wiki says you only need to have it equipped in your right hand when you loot the dragon.

maybe that is the problem it is equiped in the left hand. now I have to track down another dragon and give it a try. Yeah that was the problem. LOL I am left handed IRL so it natually for me to use items in the left hand

Last time I remember doing it I didn't even use the weapon to kill the dragon, and was still able to collect the scales when I equipped it and looted the corpse afterwards.

Shouldn't affect it, equipped in either hand has worked for me in the past.

No need to kill the Dragon with the dagger, did it with magic the last time, had to kill 2 because apparently Lighting Storm can disintegrate dragons...and ash piles don't count.

But yes as you found you must simply activate the corpse(loot) with the dagger in your right hand to acquire the heartscales. I am pretty sure you can do it on an already dead dragons, like those skeletal remains then stick around a bit too long, that I have not tried however.
