How do I set the priority higher?
This is more of a general Windows 10 question. For a while whenever I ran Skyrim it always had a pretty low framerate. Today I had the idea of running Skyrim in windowed mode and using task manager to set the priority to realtime and it worked really well. I didn't have any framerate drops, even when in combat (which is when it ran at it's worst previously). But I don't like windowed mode, and I don't like the idea of having to manually set the priority every time. Is there a way I can make my PC automatically give Skyrim realtime priority?

Do not set it to real time priority, only high.

But if you want something to automatically set the priority for you, use this:

Here's how to change your power plan in Win 10

Also, to get max performance out of an Nvidia graphics card in Nvidia control panel
Manage 3D settings>Global Settings (though you can also just do this for single games in Program Setteings)>Power management mode>prefer maximum

There's an SKSE mod that automatically sets skyrim's priority to high.

That's the one Ralof linked. I use it all the time. Works well.

You will probably have to dip your toes into the modding pool. Look at Vlad254's guides to learn how. It is not very difficult if you follow directions.

Setting CPU priority to higher settings does NOT improve game performance in most cases. Also windows and some gfx card models (RTX for example) have been known to have issues with a lot of games in full screen/windowed mode.

I just found out that actually what was making it run better was running it on a lower resolution and not the priority
