Says it's a quest item but no clue how to do the quest. Where do I go? How do you even start the quest?

It's added by this quest, it's has no quest of it's own.

Yup, looks to be added by CC content “The Grey Cowl Returns!”. Actually, it looks like you managed to get your hands on the quest reward without actually having done the quest leading up to it.

If you’re trying to get it to lose its quest-related status, looks like you’ll have to do the associate quest which - according to the link Alex provided - starts by killing a thief in Riften’s graveyard and reading a note on his body.

Thanks guys. I just found it in a tomb randomly. Kinda like when you pick up the dragon priests dagger by chance. A few others too. Wish they wouldn't spawn until you actually start the associated quest.

Funnily enough, i've got the note, but im still on the section to talk to a beggar, (basically first step) so i'd have never put 2 and 2 together...

It seems like that would be better/easier…but for whatever reason it isn’t. I’ve encountered this with some mods before, but for whatever reason Skyrim doesn’t handle “spawn X when Y happens” very well and is prone to not working right.

A beggar? I don’t have the CC the OP is referencing but I didn’t see anything about a beggar in there. There IS a letter you get that asks you to give “alms” to a beggar at the Windhelm docks that’s connected to the mini-quest to get another CC - the Ebony plate I believe.

give alms to the beggar is for "Tyra" which you then have to fight (and possibly others, i haven't done them all yet)

For "the grey cowl of nocturnal", you have to search the thief in riften graveyard as noted in the posts above. After that, you have to "speak the code phrase to a beggar".. that's as far as my quest has gone, but atleast i now know that the sword i also picked up like OP did, is for that CC quest

Gotcha.

I only have the ebony plate one and just remembered that whole thing with giving alms to a beggar. I didn’t see the beggar bit grey cowl when I looked quick - just the thief in Riften and then breaking into Bolli’s lockbox and then going to solitude to break into Erikur’s

I did the quest a couple of times I picked it up a while ago when it was free .... Not a bad piece of CC I only wished it was more flashed out.
