Best Skyrim follower?

Simple, who do y'all think is the best follower in Skyrim? For any reason. I would argue Brelyna Maryon, the Dunmer classmate at the College of Winterhold. This is Skyrim, armored warriors and archers are a dime a dozen, but mages are rare and valuable. I counted 6 mage characters available as followers, (7 if you count Serana) and Brelyna is my favorite of them all.
EDIT: I am focusing on permanent followers, completely forgot about Eola, (though I'd never want that monster!) and all the followers available through mods. If you choose a modded follower, please provide a link to the mod in question.

If you look at it as, having an additional soldier on the field, a Dead Thrall Bandit Chief wins out, for me. 2... in fact.

My targets are BCs that spawn with a full set of Steel Plate, as they are stubborn about their armor. Then, give them an Ebony or better sword, board, bow and arrows.

The only thing that will pose a threat are mages that take control over your minion. I'm sure that there's an efficient and/or effective way to counter that but I have just written them off and seek a replacement, afterwards.

Still... they're very capable and can be overwritten by summoning a random Daedra. When they fall to the ground, they become a bottomless container to resurrect an keep going.

Hmmmmm ...make Followers into Dead Thralls? ...like that nasty feeling you get at the shrine of Boetheia? ...that you can carry around with you?

Vanilla dunno mods as said Inigo also a big plus he has a real personality and if he starts singing you have the time of your life.

I’m a little biased towards mage followers because my Dragonborn is pretty much always a Breton battlemage, making mage followers more compatible in game. No need to learn smithing if neither I nor my buddy need armor or blades. With this in mind, J'zargo isn't a nice kitty, but oh well.

You wanna go stealth she is stealthy, you need a front liner she is good with one hand and block, if you want to be the front liner she is good with archery and if you want her to do all the work she is one of the few follower that will dual wield. You all are worried about level cap when you should be more worried about what a follower can achieve. All you really need to do is give her enchanted gear and upgrade it, she will carry you np.

EVERY FOLLOWER CAN DUAL WIELD, it's just that Frea and Ralis are the only ones with dual wield perks. Ralis is literally Janessa on crystallized skooma, he does everything better than she ever can, and unlike Janessa, Ralis actually focuses on sneak as one of his main skills. He does not focus archery, but his perks make up for that.

I have been inspecting followers and comparing them for ages, i know my ♥♥♥♥ when i talk about them. It's the reason i have no clue why so many consider Serana the best follower in the game, she is bottom tier, Faendal is more useful as he doesn't get stuck constantly, actually does what he's supposed to do instead of using vampiric drain and you can have free training.

For enchanted gear, yes of course, almost everyone here uses that. Just a question, what enchantments do you give your followers.

My favourite mage follower is Illia, that female who wants your help killing her mother in Darklight Tower near Riften - she absolutely rocks at magic. I invariably make a beeline to that place every game just to get her on my side asap.

Melee it's Sero (?) the merc for hire in the Retching Netch in Raven's Rock. Until him, I just love Kharjo and his Moon Amulet - not the best fighter but, by the Twin Moons, his comments tend to be the most amusing of all followers.

The combo melee/sneak follower is the treasure hunter Ralis (?) once that whole side quest outside Raven's Rock is finished. Takes a long time to get him, but he's well worth the wait and effort.

All in game, no mods needed.

Ralis is correct. Takes time and a lot of gold, but he is one of the Best ones, highest damage output of any other unmodded follower.

Illia was also my go to for a mage follower, I don't know if she is the best but she can hold her own just fine.

I've never managed to get anyone else to dual wield, then again its been a good while since I really had a follower so maybe a patch changed that. As before I'd give characters two upgraded swords and at most they would use just one. Sometimes a spell with it based on what they are already able to use. As for enchantments I normally do 2 health enchants, a stamina enchant and a couple elemental resistances. The damage enchants are based on what I know the follower is good at. I normally give Jenassa a one handed and 2 archery enchants, sometimes sneak enchant or muffle if I have it at the time. Just depends what I am going for as a build

It's only certain weapons, Frea and Ralis will use anything but a follower who doesn't dual wield by default will only use specific weapons. Forsworn weapon and Pickaxes are the only weapons I know off the top of my head.

Followers don't get affected by destruction enhanced enchantments. They can only be affected by these:

Though J’zargo does lose character points for not being a very nice kitty. He has you test experimental flame cloak spells that are extra effective on undead, except they explode and injure yourself and any followers you have. And he was planning to steal from the ruins of Saarthal, sick ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥!

Point is in my personal opinion Jenassa for early ease of access, Teldryn Sero for generally an easy time along with Ralis Sedarys but you'll need to kit him out with better stuff. BASICALLY every Dark Elf is a god in this game, who knew
