I didn't buy the AE. I bought SE.
My game's version number is 1.6.659.0.8.

I assumed they just merged the executables, and the AE content would be handled as DLC.
However, I just ran across an item in my game that the Elder Scrolls wiki tells me should be part of AE/Creation Club.

That's the GOG version, IIRC.
It's different to Steam's Version, and will affect what mods you can use. Some will work and others won't.

ALL versions come with some CC content. Fishing, Saints and Seducers, Rare Curios and Survival mode come with any .exe version above 1.6.***.
If said item was part of any of the above CC packs your not going crazy or anything, they were free for everyone.

I would also be interested in a simple way to check which version I'm playing in-game.

You've already found it. That .EXE number you should remember/writedown/check often.
That's your way of knowing what game version your using, and if you want to mod knowing your using the GOG version is vital.

It's all rather simple.
If you didn't BUY AE then you don't own it.
If you did buy it, then you have AE.

For the rest go by Version Number, people (including Bethesda themselves) misuse the term AE quite a lot, so you have to be flexible in how you think, it's not what is right, but what the person on the other end is thinking.

4 of the creation content mods which are part of the anniversary edition bundle is part of the base special edition game.

As far as versions are concerned, if you have the latest version of special edition (which you will have unless you had the game for a long time and went specifically out of your way to stop from updating), it's considered the anniversary edition when it comes to compatibility for mods. There is no difference between the two versions, the anniversary edition is just a bundle of dlc that doesn't change the version of your game

If you are in-game and want to check the version, open the game menu, navigate to the System Menu (the one with Save, Load, Exit, etc.). At the lower left corner of the menu box is the game version.

Just to be clear - the 4 items - Fishing, Survival mode, Rare Curios, and Saints and Seducers are not free added content - they are now part of the base game - just as Dawnguard, Heartfires, and Dragonborn are. So when talking about the base game this is what is meant:

Skyrim.esm
Update.esm
Dawnguard.esm
Hearthfires.esm
Dragonborn.esm
Fishing
Survival Mode
Rare Curios
Saints and Seducers

None of those are added content - that is the game.

Otherwise it is as has been stated - the game is Skyrim Special Edition, AE is just the DLC or the marketing name for the bundle of the base game and the AE DLC.

Actually, I did figure it out and that .exe version tells nothing.

When people say "SE" is 1.5.x they mean "the last version of SE before AE was launched".
If you download the latest version of SE from Steam or GOG it will be 1.6.x regardless which one you have. Also it's not an in-game check, which I specified in my question. Something like "if you can improve the pickaxe your unofficial patch is working" is what I was looking for.

But I was able to find out which version I had regardless. Like someone said above, the SE now includes some CC content, which wasn't mentioned on the Wiki page I was looking at.

Yes

Not completely true, as i pointed out. 659 for GOG, 640 for Steam, and i believe there's another version for Epic. There are some mods that won't work on the GOG or Epic versions, so yeah, as i said before you do need to know that specific version.

Then there's mods for .353 as well, which further complicates it (Older steam version)

Help "mace" 4. See if you have the ancient nord one. That's part of fishing.

BUT, as i said before, you already knew which version you had due to the numbers!

It absolutely doesn't, as pointed out by the people above. The SE and AE run on the same .exe. The "AE upgrade" just unlocks the CC DLC. The .exe is identical for both.

The GOG version of SE is 1.6.659.0.8.
The GOG version of AE is 1.6.659.0.8.
Tell me, what do these numbers tell?

btw. Fun fact, installing the SE from GOG Galaxy created an installation folder titled "Skyrim Anniversary Edition". Because it's the exact same game just without the DLC.
Altbert 2023년 8월 24일 오후 1시 17분
OMG, why do people (including Bethesda and others) want to make this so confusing? Skyrim has only two main versions: 32-bit Classic Skyrim (version 1.1.x to 1.9.x, latest being 1.9.32.0.8) and 64-bit Skyrim Special Edition (version 1.1.x to 1.6.x, latest being 1.6.640). GOG and Epic may have a different version numbering. "Anniversary Edition" only means that addional DLCs have been added to Skyrim Special Edition, either as an update (4 Creation Club mods) or an upgrade (all Creation Club mods).

Anniversary Edition == Special Edition. PERIOD! If Bethesda wanted it to be a "real" Anniversary Edition, they would have changed the version number from 1.5.x to 2.1.x. or even better changed the numbering to 1.1.x for a totally new version of the game.

FYI: version numbering will indicate development progress. E.g. in version number 1.2.3.4
1 = major build
2= minor build
3 = build/revision
4 = maintenance/build

Major build is still 1 (1.6.640) so the game is Skyrim Special Edition. Minor build is 6 which means that support for CC content is added to Special Edition. 640 means that some issues have been resolved.

Check your Skyrim version as mentioned earlier and download and installs mods that match your version.

Ignore all this nonsense of "I know it best, do not listen to others". If they had something worth listening to then they did not need to cry about it in the first place.

Start by saying which mods you are interested in require it. Post a link to each. Some mods require only game version 1.6.640 or higher for instance and refer to it as the Anniversary Edition. Other mods require the content that came with the Anniversary Edition, and some require both. This means some mods may not actually require you to have bought the Anniversary Edition. And even those that do require it may have alternative solutions, or there may be similar mods that can replace them without the requirement.

Your above 1.6, thus have the "ae" "version" of the game. The entire confusion as Altbert said is primarily to blame for this, but anything above 1.6 has the 4 CC.
However, there is NO AE version of the game, it's all SE. (see the confusion?)

Just adds to the confusion... And why what i was saying about knowing that you have the gog version by remembering the .659 is crucial if your planning on modding the game. Steam's exe is different, ending in .640 etc.. i've already said it...

Anniversary Edition == Special Edition. PERIOD!

Well, my question was primarily "how do I check if additional DLCs have been added to my Skyrim Special Edition"?

Altbert님이 먼저 게시:

Well, Bethesda sells two versions of the game, Special Edition and Anniversary Edition. Then Special Edition installs into a folder titled "Anniversary Edition" and includes some added content that came with the Anniversary Edition update. It doesn't help that both titles use the word "Edition", signaling some type of parity. It's not Anniversary Update or Pack, it's "Edition", like it's a new version in the vein Special Edition. Except it's not. It's DLC for Special Edition.

People don't want to make it confusing. It IS confusing.

I get that, but I never asked if I have an old version of SE. My question was if I have SE or AE.

https://i.imgur.com/W5wFtud.png see this? I bought the thing on the right. It's called Special Edition.

I was concerned I might've received the thing in the middle (which I did not want) because:
#1 The installation folder is named "Skyrim Anniversary Edition".
#2 The Elder Scrolls wiki listed an item as only appearing in "The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Anniversary Edition".
#3 People like you calling everything above 1.6 Anniversary Edition and telling to check the version number, despite the fact that a new install of Special Edition uses the exact same 1.6 version number with or without the AE content.

A 1.6 version of SE is what I want, and what I seem to have. I got an answer to my question, but the version number didn't help in any way. That's why I was asking for a simple way to check in-game, like an item or character appearing in one version but not another.

This is what the others were saying; everyone buys special edition. There's no AE. It's just an add-on, like DLC really.

It's all been caused by the players. Mostly down to the SKSE team calling it AE, as well as a number of more well known mod authors..

It's not AE, and it never will be unless Bethesda roll it out as a proper separate game version, but i doubt they'd do that. They only made SE because they were making so many changes to the engine to make it 64bit.

Both of these are blatantly false statements. The version number is the same for both, which you already know.

You gave me the wrong answer, which was to look at the version number. Your answer would've been correct if my question had been "do I have an old version of SE?".

It's ok to be wrong sometimes.

No, because there isn't a "Both". There is only SE. There is no separate AE version of the game.
Not one.
At all.
Anywhere.

AE is an add-on. If you buy AE from any legitimate place, you'll get SE + the AE add-on.

biceps always together!!님이 먼저 게시:

Umm, no. No it wouldn't.

There are a number of up-to-date versions of AE, that are all different. I named 2, Steam, and GoG. Same game, both are up-to-date, both are differing in version number.

Epic is another, and i think there's 1 more not counting VR, Switch or major consoles....
