Pressing [ESC] is closing my game

Even without any mods, any idea on what can be the cause of this?

Does it always do it? I have a vague recollection of something similar happening to me over the years but never persistant (Once in a very blue moon type of situation, 2-3 times over 10k + hours).

If it is persistant there is just no telling without more information (and even then, it can be tough to diagnose). At the very least System Specs and Mod Load Order.

I have rechecked the game files, started a new game without any mods, and it still happens every time I press escape key.
Maybe gonna try to delete manually the save folder and the game itself, then reinstall, kinda nuke'ish but don't have other ideas.

Try a complete Clean Reinstall following this guide and the video included to the letter:

Something to do with the user interface still active despite the fact that you have removed all the mods. Did you try SSEdit to clean up your files ?

Thats a good point. Steam Overlay enabled? Cloud Saves? I can see either one of those being an issue. Nvidia Card With Geoforce Experience enabled is my personal boogyman (I spend alot of effort to ensure it never gets on my computer).

I think this is the last thing left now. I have used this geforce experience one-click game optimizer cause I have ultra-wide monitor and without it I can't use my native resolution in game. Gonna try without overlay, then with default settings 16:10

Yupp, it was that overlay ♥♥♥♥. I did optimize with geforce experience just turned off overlay and closed the app before starting game and it works now. Thx
