Doing the Dark Brotherhood for the first time... but I don't want to kill anyone! Thoughts?
Well, not quite the first time. I never finished, but I did complete some of it in my first playthrough when the game was first released. And then I put it off in later playthroughs and became rather attached the named NPCs in playthroughs where I forgot they were Dark Brotherhood targets. Narfi the beggar? Who'd even want him dead?! I feel bad for the guy! Ect. Ect.

As I've got lots of mods that populate the world now, a few less faces would hardly be noticable anymore. But... still. But I want to complete this questline for the first time ever so now I'm stuck.

Currently I'm battling myself over whether to kill Nilsene Shatter-Shield or not even though the girl literally has about two scripted comments. But I saved her from death already in Blood on the Ice so I'm a little attached, you know?

Anyways, as console resurrect commands don't work for Dark Brotherhood deaths (I tried on Narfi and he's MIA now), does anyone have any advice for someone who doesn't want to kill anyone doing this questline? Thoughts and prayers? Anyone have the same problem? What did you do?

OLD OLD SAYING: Ya got to break some eggs to make an omlet...you must be new to this game...I mean killing is what they do so either kill or get out of the guild
Dark Brotherhood is a guild of Assassins..........

Assassins assassinate........

And you don't want to kill anyone.........

Not sure what to say, other than you are looking at the wrong guild.

You'd better believe I don't belong in this guild. But I have the powers of a god the console, why is there no way to just undo my killings. *sobs quietly into the abandoned house of Narfi*. Honestly this wasn't a problem in my first playthrough. It's that since then I've gotten attached to these dumb NPCs with three lines.

*sighs* All I want is completion. I can do this. (No I can't but I'm trying)

We really can't help you I mean what did you expect what you have to do in the DB ... sitting around and sipping tea? Oh yea misuse of the console that won't cause any problems ....

STAY AWAY FROM THE CONSOLE!

Hells, since you've ALREADY introduced rot into your save by trying to use the console to rez named characters you might as well simply delete your character and start fresh, because, and I'll type thus EXTRA slowly so maybe it'll sink into your skull... DEATH SCRIPTS CAN NOT BE UNDONE! ... This means that your game thinks said NPCs are both dead and alive at the same time, which introduces script errors whenever they are referenced, which basically means whenever they are in the same zone you are in. These script errors lead to additional script errors and eventually your save will completely break.

Oh, just let him ruin his game.

I am so tired of seeing people purposefully break their game, then slink in here looking for a fix.

You know what? Chill dudes. It's a game, and the second reference to the condole was a joke. I'm a very empathetic person and I'm just looking for anyone to talk with who might understand the struggle so I can get through the damn quests of killing dumb NPCs with barely any personality who I'm unjustifiably attached to. Nobody, then, I assume? Not people yelling at me for f-ing up my save and that I shouldn't be trying to do a relatively main game questline if I'm not up to it. It's my save, I get that it will one day die, what else is new it's Skyrim and it's modded was gonna happen eventually anyways, I can live with the consequences, whatever. I'm not going to come here crying when a save I've borked up 8 ways from Sunday in an already broken game dies a slow painful death. I just wanted to see if this was just me who wants to do this huge set of in-game content that's has an ending I'm looking forward to (I mean, c'mon, killing the emperor!?) but just can't get to that point because I'm too attached to dumb pieces of code with names who I have to cut through to get to that point. Apparently just me. *shrugs*

Did you really expect the answer to be anything other than; "Its just you?"

Look, I know what I'm about to say next is going to be misrepresented as "She's just being mean!"; but I promise you that isnt the case, because what you are portraying the scenario as is you are becoming overly emotionally attached to what are very shallow, virtual non characters; to the point that its causing you actual angst and emotional distress to complete the assassination quests.

Assuming for a moment that you aren't exaggerating for effect; interactive media such video games probably isn't a healthy venue for you to expose yourself to.
Hammer Of Evil Mar 18, 2019 @ 6:35pm
well it's not called 'the friendly brotherhood' buddy. Maybe skip joining if you don't want to kill bipedal hominids.

also, as a sidenote, i can trace almost every save game corruption in my bethesda games to screwing around with the console. just not a good idea. its best to create a mod specialized to do what you want to work seamlessly with the game. unless you don't care about your game randomly grenading itself to desktop or the save corrupting at some point.

Yeah, I kind of was hoping? Otherwise I wouldn't have asked. It's not a lot of emotional distress and I didn't intend to make it sound like it. It's just enough to prevent me from wanting to pull the trigger and have the NPCs gone from my save despite wanting to do the questline. I think you're putting too much into this. It's less emotional distress and more I just can't bring myself to do it in the first place. Seriously, does nobody understand the struggle haha? I genuinely didn't think "I don't want to kill NPCs but this major quest means I have to kill a lot of them so it's so hard for me to do" would be a controversial opinion. I do know they're flat characters who I'll always end up alive and well in my next save anyways.

Honestly, if it caused me that much emotional distress, I'd ignore the Dark Brotherhood, no big. I just don't /want/ to kill NPCs, you get me? Literally came here looking for literally anyone who might have similar responses to video games to have a conversation about the struggle of hesitating to comple the Dark Brotherhood with, that's all. I've played about 8 million different saves in this game, I'd like to complete the Dark Brotherhood just once, you know? Can't avoid it forever.

Well, assuming that your clarification/downplaying of the unhealthy attachment issue is right the reason that it's still a controversial opinion and you are alone in your stance is because most people are willing to weigh the aspects of the game they enjoy and if they really don't enjoy something, they simply skip that content.

In other words, yes, you really CAN avoid doing the DB questline forever and there is nothing wrong in doing so.
fauxpas Mar 18, 2019 @ 7:09pm
And if you want to experience the content without actually "pulling the trigger" yourself, there should be YouTube videos of the quests.

*shrugs* I hate let's plays. Just makes me want to do it myself all the more. I have seen a lot of the content of the quest already, but that doesn't make me want to do it less. Haha.

Anyways, hate to be that person, but if you just want to be condescending about the topic at hand, why bother commenting? You really don't have to be rude about it. "I don't recommend using the console for that and lol dude it's just you" would have got your point across in less effort.

(Because seriously, I'm making fun of myself as well as looking to see if anyone else might be like-minded, did you seriously not catch that bit when you decided you needed to seriously scold me for daring to break my own video game and how dare I even play video games when I like NPCs that can't be good for me???? Like I might be reading everyone else's comments wrong but I saw this as a pretty joking and friendly conversation before you jumped in.)
fauxpas Mar 18, 2019 @ 8:01pm
That's simple, I made the mistake of actually taking you as a serious human being and responded as such, since you didn't leave any of the traditional clues of silliness, such as smilies or the like. Hells, before this latest backtracking you seemed to respond to me as, once again, a serious human being (albeit one with serious issues).

As for the console, nah, I may have been the second person to scold you for it, but that barrage was coming with or without me because all to often we do have to deal with people who break thier games and then whine about it on the forums, and it's not a joking matter here.
