Do NPC/Follower/Companion 'steal' the experience from our kills or do I get it?
When a Follower of mine either gets the last hit on an enemy or outright solo kills it does she get the experience points for the kill or do I?

I've tried searching this, but there are soo many possible search terms I don't know if I'm phrasing it right.

You get it all, followers level based on your level. I have no link to point to, just hundreds of hours of game play.

You dont get experience for killing enemies and doing quests in skyrim, you get experience from leveling your skills. For example, your one handed increases when you hit an enemy, and your level increases when your one handed skill levels up.
So in a way, your companions do prevent levelling as they reduce the enemies health, making it harder to level your combat skills as you will be getting less hits before the enemy dies, this makes it harder for you to raise your main level.
Hope this made sense and helps bro!

Follower is there to help you better chance to alive, and carry burden stuff, if you want to level up quicker, then sole, but risker, something you had to trade off.

experience is only applied to your skill through the use of the skill itself. 'each use' will reward an increase to the skill progress bar. (lets call this 'experience' for the sake of talking about it.)

a follower actually decreases the 'experience' you can get by decreasing the hp of the target. for combat-oriented skills, lets say. skills that reward increase through damage dealt.

so if your follower has hit a target 8 times, thats 8 less hits you can perform with, say, your two handed hammer, which only awards 2 handed experience 'per hit' on a live target. after 8 hits, the target has less available 'skill xp' for you to get through smacking it with your hammer.

xp is not 'totaled' at the end of the fight, or anything like that.

after enough skill increases, your 'total level' will increase, awarding you an increase of a stat, a perk point, and the joy of having access to higher leveled rewards from dungeon chests and mob kills. each successive level requires more 'skill increases' to reach the next level.

when a skill is lvl 100, you can choose to 'go legendary' and reset the skill to 0, and continue leveling it back up, thereby increasing the max 'total level' you can reach.

I hope this made some ounce of sense, its easy to get lost in the mass amount of info available for skyrim.

This was what I was trying to get at, but you explained it much better :lunar2019crylaughingpig:

They do steal your cool finishing moves.

Have an enemy on their knees, walk up slowly and stare at them, say your catch phrase and swing.....and your companion shoots/blasts whatever them denying you your cool finish.

I hate companions, partners, pets, followers of all kinds. I have yet to find a game where they are an asset and not a liability.

A warm and hearty Thank-you to each of you and your answers.
They were all very helpful.

In my opinion you level too fast anyway. Good detailed answer from everyone but me. I assumed the op would understand you only get xp when they actually perform a task. Which means the follower does not "steal" your xp.

But my issue has always been leveling too fast. shrugs.
