[Solved & thanks all] Q: Survival mode cooking: Amounts of salt needed to prepare a meal, bugged?
Hello,

I started playing Survival mode hoping to have a nice experience like FO4 Survival.
When I got to the cooking pot in Riverwood and went through the list of meals, I was kind of shocked.
The majority of the meals need either 5 regular salt (or sometimes 1 fire salt which is not that common loot).

How big is the impact on gameplay for finding salt to even make a meal? The choice is very limited for simple cooking (cabbage meal).

Even on very easy difficulty this would be more like 'finding salt mode' instead of survival mode. Am I missing something?

I read another thread about the salt, and I should visit every Inn to buy a few more (unfortunately not enough). But even then, how do people manage to create a few of those meals to play without feeling hungry if they take 5 salt each to create them?

I'm sure there is a mod out there that can fix this. But I assume Bethesda thought this is their view on Survival mode so I must be wrong and missing something...... right?

Generally speaking though you will need to scrounge all the Sacks you find in dungeons, hoping to get 3-4 units of Salt here and there.

Ok ty for the info. I'll just take the chance and see how far I get, hopefully will find more while looting instead of cooking myself.

Wait, is needing 5 salt a bug? I went through the available recipes in Riverwood ('starting' village) and made a summary:

I can make 36 different meals:
- 18 of them need 5 Salt a piece
- 12 need 1 Fire salt a piece
- 2 of them need 1 Moon sugar (one of them already counted to fire salt).

So, that's 31 meals that need either a crazy amount of salt, or the rarer fire salt/moon sugar. Well, that's a nice way to start cooking.

Can someone confirm this is a bug? I really hope it's a bug....
If it's not a bug then I'll have to pillage bandit camps for meals.

btw I'm not using mods, except some from CC (that shouldn't cause bugs?)

So you are using mods.
The author of this thread has indicated that this post answers the original topic.

Meh; the CC mods wouldn't affect the cooking recipes.

Looking through the Sacks in Bandit dungeons will get you tons of Salt. In fact they're excellent places to find almost every ingredient outside of Raw Meat. (Rabbit and Pheasent isn't uncommon though.)

Embershard Mine along the road to Riverwood will net you at least 15 units alone. Even more if you're lucky.

Survival definitely does not increase the amount of Salt need for recipes though.
You may possibly be confused by the interface. If the Recipe says "Salt (5)" that means you have 5 units of salt *in your inventory*.

Well I love looting everything (I plunder every location in Fallout 4), unfortunately survival here means 50% less carry weight but as long as I find enough food/salt I'l be okay. At least it gives me many more playing hours :)

tbh I expected something similar to FO4 survival but now that I know there's enough salt if I keep looking I only got more excited about Skyrim Survival.

omg I'm such a dumbass. You're so right, that is a great relief! Now I'm definately confident to succeed in survival mode. Thanks a ton (of salt :steamhappy: ) for the advice!
It's time to raise difficulty again and have fun, thanks!
