Then, configure xLODGen to run from within your mod manager. This is critical.
Then download and install one of the terrain resource files from here[www.nexusmods.com]. It doesn't really matter which one, I use the biggest.
Note that the resource file is temporary and will be removed after terrain generation.
Configure xLODGen LOD4, 8, 16, and 32 for your machine. Every install is different so my settings probably won't make sense for you. See the S.T.E.P. forums for optimum settings to use as a starting point.
[edit] For reference, these are the settings I use:

Run xLODGen from within your mod manager. The output will be in the Overwrite folder when it is done. Create a mod from the Overwrite folder and name it "Terrain LOD Output" or something that makes sense to you. Activate this mod.
Remove the terrain resource file mod.
All done. Terrain LOD generation has a minimal effect on the visuals in game. It is noticeable but you may have to look closely to see the detail changes.
Lets do step 1 first. I have to verify the integrity of game files trough Steam, right?
I didn't unable or uninstalled my mods in Vortex. When I opened Vortex AFTER Skyrim was reinstalled I noticed that nothing seemed broken. It gave 0 warnings or errors.
Is this right? To be sure. Maybe I had to deploy the modlist but everything worked again like it should be.
Arent there any mod files in the Skyrim main folder?
so if I'm understanding you correctly you simply verified the integrity of you game files and if that's all you did and Vortex did not see any problems then Vortex is happy and did not report any errors.
Not really, Vortex puts mods in the mod staging folder, it then makes hard links, a arcane
subject that most don't understand.
I deployed my mods again, and boom, nothing, all seems to work fine. Is this right?
All it needed to do was put new hard links back in.
