MORE ON UPDATES
This is from post #17 in this thread regarding forced updates:

Can you explain in layman's terms why playing offline activates the automatic update function - whereas playing online with Steam on does not? I simply do not understand. If you set Steam to not update the game AND you play through the SKSE launcher, then it should be sufficient? I am still puzzled as to why it happened.

Let me start off by saying I don't claim to be an expert on this (so layman's terms shouldn't be a problem) but I did some research a while back and here's why I believe I have yet to have a problem.

The problem started when you played in offline mode. This is why I always state "Never launch Skyrim SE via Steam and ONLY launch via the skse64_loader and only WHILE STEAM IS RUNNING in the background". Yeah it's tricky in the sense that simply setting Steam to "ony update this game when I launch it"
and then only launching the game thru SKSE is not always enough. But if you always launch SSE while Steam is running and never it launch while Steam is not running you should be fine.

My understanding is that SKSE still needs to verify that you own the game via Steam. So if you run the game through SKSE and steam is NOT already running then the next time you are on-line and launch your game thru SKSE it will launch steam and auto-update the game during that verify process regardless of your settings.

Note that you could also do the manifest ID thing recently suggested here in the forums .

This (the above) is my understanding anyway.

But I do have a question for you. Are you always launching thru Vortex? I always do and not too long ago read that because of Vortex using the hardlink system this could be an advantage.

I saved the post as I was going to incorporate it into my Vortex guide but have not yet done so for two reasons. 1. I don't totally completely understand it and 2. I need to verify it. But here is what was said:

"Vortex's virtualization technology (called Hardlink Deployment) deploys a bunch of Hardlinks, which directly link one file to another in a way almost completely undetectable by software (unless you're scanning the master file table for references to the same clusters). Because Hardlinks act exactly like normal files in Windows and are (subjectively) super useful in mod development. It also means that you can have a shortcut directly to skse64_loader.exe."

so i'll have to do some further research on the vortex thing but that's that for now.

This game still gets updates?

Except when can be we sure we are ready to turn updates back on? Bethesda keeps pumping out "fixes" that break things. I don't remember turning updates back on but I must have done and now I am paying the price. I am beginning to think turning on updates is not going to be a good idea for quite some time, if ever. (OK, the "if ever" is a bit melodramatic, but I guess I am bone tired with it all.)

Some updates are necessary, the next update will fix the corrupted textures caused by today's update, so if you have already updated today, update again to fix those textures.
Or you can fix the texture problem by getting texture replacers for the corrupted textures.

LOL, so updates are only necessary to fix problems caused by updates.

That's as hilarious as it sounds.

It is the world we live in, unless you protected your game already, in which case you would
be to busy playing the game to notice.

Personally I downgraded my game to 1.5 a few days ago and stopped the updates right there.

No problems so far :s

I've had my game protected for almost 3 years with no forced updates. Can they happen? Anything can happen. But at least take the steps.

My game updated ;(

But getting the updated versions of both the SKSE mod and the Address Librarymod got it to work again. I think playing offline when I had shaky internet connection did it...

You should stay away from some places then, since there are two corrupted textures.
One is in Dawnstar, the other is found in certain crypts.
These two,

A texture replacer for both of those would fix it.

Yeah, I just went into the Dawnstar museum to see if I have the same issue, and I do ;(

I haven't unlocked the other place.

At any rate, I am never playing offline again - even if I don't have internet access and the temptation is overwhelming! ;)

Yeah I'm going thru a shaky internet right now so there's that. Glad you got it back up and running. Congrats on that.
