The only time they would consider acting like a house cat is spy work.
This is where I am unsure. At least one source https://www.reddit.com/r/teslore/comments/7ay4me/the_many_phases_of_khajiit_the_alfiq/ has insinuated that Alfiq are generally a lot more playful than so-called normal Khajiit. While it is certainly true that they are every bit as intelligent as any other Khajiit they seem to have certain characteristics that are unique to them. Of course the trouble is there aren't an awful lot of official sources on this (at least that I can find) so a lot of this is speculative.
I suppose, would any other Khajiit enjoy getting petted? I suppose it is not out of the question.
Nice! Never knew about this source. I'll have to take a look.
Well, according to a book "Bounty and Shields" they can purr...

scroll down to the Afiq section.
No the weirdes thas to be: what Vivec did with Molag Bal .. that i can't even describe here because i might risk getting a warning.
I'll have to contemplate this a bit further. My PC doesn't particularly know an awful lot about Khajiit society after having been raised in a Telvanni slave quarters (and thus the Alfiq form would probably be completely unknown to him due to them being so rare) so it may not really occur to him that petting a Khajiit that only LOOKS like a house cat may be a faux pas.
Nothing about the time-traveling robot Pelinal Whitestrake?
Oh my..
Still the Vivec + Molag Bal imo is the weirdest.
Yeah...there is a LOT of weirdness with TES. This is certainly one of the top ten most fleshed out lore out there. It's up there with Star Wars and D&D (which, btw, has miniature giant space hamsters; that's what Boo was in Baldur's Gate).
