What to do after returning Serana to castle Volkihar?
I'm doing the dawnguard dlc and I just returned Serana to her father and rejected his gift. I got kicked out and now I'm not sure what to do now? I returned to the dawnguard fort but no one is giving me a quest or something

Go back to where you got kicked out and try taking the boat back across the water this time.

thats a common bug. the next quest "a new order" should have started as soon as you finished "bloodline".

"The quest may fail to start after refusing Harkon's gift and being returned to the landing.[verification needed — needs more details/further testing to determine the reason]
PC You can fix this by entering either setstage DLC1HunterBaseIntro 20 or setstage DLC1HunterBaseIntro 30, followed by setobjectivedisplayed DLC1HunterBaseIntro 20 1 or 30 1 into the console.
A potential cause of this bug may occur if you encountered a living Vigilant Tolan in Dimhollow Crypt. If he perished on your way through, and the above fix is not working, return to the living Tolan's body and use the Resurrect Command Code on his body, then attempt the above fix again"

It's much safer to reload an earlier save and try again than to force things with the console.

Do you use Unofficial Skyrim Special Edition Patch? I had never ever have a problem with this quest so I see it baffling, that someone have this kind of bug. And yes you should swim back to Icewater Jetty and fast travel to Fort Dawnguard after. This is crucial.

Should get you back on track.

While I like Serana it still makes no sense that your vampire hunter character finds an ancient vampire with an Elder scroll and says "Sure lets take her home to an obvious vampire lair"

it just works.

Vampires in TES are skilled in illusion and very sedductive because of this people don't seem to notice something is wrong when looking at a vampire or they notice but are still somewhat enthralled. Because of this vampires can aquire Thralls more easily look how the Moth priest reacts when you enthrall him he almost sounds like your personal simp.

I just try to imagine that Serana's vampiric charm worked on player character for a while so he did some stupid things like bringing her "home" and then realized later after parting ways with her "oh ♥♥♥♥.."

Or if you are evil it was just urge to seek greater power and potentially join them.

@OP: Did you fast travel to the Fort after getting banished without using the rowboat? I have noticed that after you get banished from the castle if you don't use the rowboat to leave it seems to miss a quest trigger.

I had this same issue and reloading and using the boat allowed me to continue the quest-line.

Yeah, this has always bugged me as well. If i'm playing as a vampire hunter, then I usually treat it the way alucard said. Either she used vampire seduction / magic on me, or I was "gathering intel" for the dawnguard. Better to get her home and gather intel than kill her and still have no idea where the attacks are coming from.

Still, i hate having to rationalize that. I'd prefer to kill her, take the scroll back to HQ, and have the quest progress from there. "This is what they were after (the scroll), we have to unravel it's meaning!"
