"The quest may fail to start after refusing Harkon's gift and being returned to the landing.[verification needed — needs more details/further testing to determine the reason]
PC You can fix this by entering either setstage DLC1HunterBaseIntro 20 or setstage DLC1HunterBaseIntro 30, followed by setobjectivedisplayed DLC1HunterBaseIntro 20 1 or 30 1 into the console.
A potential cause of this bug may occur if you encountered a living Vigilant Tolan in Dimhollow Crypt. If he perished on your way through, and the above fix is not working, return to the living Tolan's body and use the Resurrect Command Code on his body, then attempt the above fix again"

And then this:
Should get you back on track.
it just works.
Heck i never seen this problem even without Unofficial Patch
Vampires in TES are skilled in illusion and very sedductive because of this people don't seem to notice something is wrong when looking at a vampire or they notice but are still somewhat enthralled. Because of this vampires can aquire Thralls more easily look how the Moth priest reacts when you enthrall him he almost sounds like your personal simp.
I just try to imagine that Serana's vampiric charm worked on player character for a while so he did some stupid things like bringing her "home" and then realized later after parting ways with her "oh ♥♥♥♥.."
Or if you are evil it was just urge to seek greater power and potentially join them.
I had this same issue and reloading and using the boat allowed me to continue the quest-line.
Yeah, this has always bugged me as well. If i'm playing as a vampire hunter, then I usually treat it the way alucard said. Either she used vampire seduction / magic on me, or I was "gathering intel" for the dawnguard. Better to get her home and gather intel than kill her and still have no idea where the attacks are coming from.
Still, i hate having to rationalize that. I'd prefer to kill her, take the scroll back to HQ, and have the quest progress from there. "This is what they were after (the scroll), we have to unravel it's meaning!"
